Here are a few red rose suggestions that I have for the Seattle area. Olympiad, Precious Platinum, Opening Night, Grand Amore, Kardinal/Korlingo, Alec's Red, Crimson Bouquet, Ulmer Munster, and Ace of Hearts/Asso di Couri would all fill the bill nicely. Some of these are in the rose garden in Woodland Park in Seattle if you have a chance to look at them. Some of them can get tall. If you are slightly devious, and if you can find someone who has one and can take cuttings and root them, there was another red rose out some years ago called Tuxedo that did well for me at my house out there. It really should have been a grandiflora because of its growth and blooming habit, but it disappeared from the market. It did well in the rose shows out there. Maybe someone out there who reads this knows what I am talking about and can offer to help you with this one.

Depending on how much sunlight Double Delight, and other photochemically reactive varieties for that matter, gets determines the depth of the color change. DD does turn a fairly strong red. As to Oklahoma, since it is an offspring of Chrysler Imperial which does not like cool, damp, and rainy weather, it might be rather iffy. It is fine when the weather warms up, but I wouldn't expect it to look its best in cool, rainy weather. Either Ace of Hearts, Opening Night, or Ulmer Munster is a better choice for a darker red.

If you want to go lighter, consider Elina. The creamy yellow of Elina coordinates beautifully with Double Delight. I came up with this combination in my garden by accident, and it looks great.

Thanks guys. I am wanting an Elina..my plan however is to put DD down in front..three red behind it with John Paul against my fence in back. Any more ideas for a red to go behind DD is welcome..for my zone anyway!

My second year Oklahoma did quite right by me last year so I wouldn't necessarily shy away from it for our zone. There are also a number of red or purplish red Austins if you aren't looking for HT's only.

A very tough question; I had the same challenge. I've got mine flanked by JFK and Oklahoma, but won't know until Spring what it will look like. PJPII sounds good. Would lean towards the darker reds.

Pope John Paul II is a great rose and being white it can be planted about anywhere I think.
I think that a nice mauve would look good next to DD. There are a lot to choose from and I would suggest checking out Help Me Find to find a good one for your area.
As far as dark red HT's go, Veterans' HOnor, Beloved, Olympiad, Royal William, and Liebeszauber would be my considerations.
Pride of England is a cherry red HT that grows like gangbusters and is in continuous bloom in my garden. I have seen as many as 50 blooms on my POE at a time and the foliage stays very healthy. You just have to make sure you have a big spot for it though because it gets very tall and very wide and bushy.
