Hi Karl, Are any of these ones you would recommend? I don't know which one is for what and wondered what bypass pruner means. I have only grown roses for about 3 yrs or so and just usually prune with whatever pruner I grab and have learned in the last year to make sure they stay sanitized to keep from spreading anything from rose to rose. Helpful hints on which to use for what and how do you sanitize yours? Judy

Bypass pruners work like scissors. They're what you want. The Fiscars are Ok if you have just a few roses but the Felcos are the best. I have a pair that's 25 years old and still going strong. Don't get the anvil type, they crush or bruise the stems.

It's a pretty good price. They can be purchased directly from earthbox.com for $47.95 each. This includes everything the Amazon offer does, but also adds a bag of potting mix as well. They are less if you buy 3 or more. Shipping is $15.95 for a total of 63.90. So $55 for one without potting mix or $63 for one with potting mix. Kind of a toss up depending on whether you want the EB mix or prefer to make/buy your own. $8.00 for a 2 cu. ft. bag is about the going rate in my area. If you decide to order directly from EB, call your order in and ask them to do better on the shipping price if you buy more than one. Their web cart charges $15.95 each for shipping no matter how many you buy, but they will fit several into one box so calling them may get better shipping terms. If anyone does this and they don't cut the shipping rate please let me know. No, I don't have any *pull* with the EB people, but I know a couple people working for them I would ask about it.

That is a very good price. I bought mine direct from Mantis for more but I would still consider that if I were you. Reason is service. When I got it new, I notice the engine looked like there are some fishnet pattern on the casting, I demand an exchange, they did, free. 5 months down the road, the gear box jammed. I open it and found no grease it the housing, they forgot to put grease in. They shopped me a new gear box, arrange return shipment, no charge, no question ask. I love it. YOu cannot avoid things gone wrong, service is more important. I take them over the dealer. BTW, it is the best piece of equipment I bought!!! It is so useful, get the dethatcher attachment. It worked so well, it does not beat up the lawn like the big dethatcher. The lawn look good right after the dethatching. I use it all the time, to get rid of weeds, dig holes for planting etc. I got the one with Honda engine, it is very quiet and easy to start.

That's a good price on that All American 921. I had one and gave it to a relative when I got the All American 930. The 921 model can process 7 quart jars at once; after I got into canning I got the 930 because it can handle 14 quart jars at once (two layers of 7 jars each). If you're planning to can a LOT of stuff it might make sense to get the larger model, but either one is a great item. All American canners are built like a tank. Your great grandchildren will be fighting over who gets it.

My Bolero is equally well grown, small but vigorous, with a well developed root system. For the price, it is a good deal. Somehow, I suspect Stargazer Perennials is doing tissue culture themselves or purchasing tissue cultured plugs, and growing them on. My Bolero does not appear too have started life as a cutting. I should enquire about this possibility. I have many young fig trees that were tissue cultured. I like this method of propagation because parent tissue is cleansed of pathogens as an initial step in the tissue culture process. The resulting plant gets off to a disease free start, carrying no harmful matter that was harbored in the parent. Moses

The F6 are supposed to be for small hands, that's what I have. I was thinking of getting the #2 for larger branches.

Buford, I don't think that a #2 is going to give you any better cutting capabilities than the #6. I could have this wrong, but I think the difference is just in the grip itself and how it feels in the hand. If you really need something for a bigger branch you might consider the Felco lopper(#20). It's my go-to tool between the hand pruners and the sawzall.....

Deb, what Susan said, get the Felco loppers, great for thicker canes, and for getting in to spaces where you may not want to reach in to get to that one unruly cane (ouch!)!

I have some Fiskars pruners, and they are good in a pinch and for light pruning, but the Felcos do the heavy lifting.

I have lopers. The #6 I find great for light pruning, but too small for larger branches. I used a friends #2 and it will cut larger branches and the blade is shaped a bit differently. They had two handled pruners, but I like my lopers. Anyway, it can't hurt to have 2 pairs since I'm constantly misplacing them anyway :)
