Ebb Tide
Comments (5)My Ebb Tide is a Dr. Jekyl/Mr.Hyde rose. I hate the Spring blooms because the flower petals are tiny diamond shaped things that make the bloom look like a puffball--UGLY but still fragrant. However, the rest of the year the blooms are quite nice, wonderful color, and deliciously fragrant. And, the first flush is smallest-thank goodness-and the rest of the year it is loaded. Last year I cut off all the Spring buds after seeing them start to open ugly again so it would get to the better blooms quicker. It worked!! So, I will do the same this year. If the first couple are ugly I will chop 'em off and wait for the next cycle. John...See MoreEbb Tide
Comments (27)My Ebb Tide is in it's second year in my garden. The blooms start out as a semi-dark purple color and do fade quite a bit and rather quickly. The bush is in pretty much full sun all day long. My plant is definitely not as floriferous and pretty as the pictures that Tim posted here. Mine is kind of disappointing to me. It has a wonderful fragrance though. I don't really care for the form of the flowers as it is rather pom-pom like to my eye and I much prefer the high center exhibition form to the decorative style of the floribundas as a whole. If it were to die, I wouldn't buy another Ebb Tide to replace it. John...See MorePink Ebb Tide
Comments (9)In my thread linked below, I go on and on about how much I like 'Ebb Tide.' The title of the thread, "Improving Ebb Tide," along with other posts I've made about the rose, explain that I think it needs work or improvement. I was recently struck by the realization - accurate or not, that 'Ebb Tide' had brought most of the characteristics of 'Sweet Chariot' into a floribunda bush form. IMHO, 'Ebb Tide' is a great example of the work (or art) that rose breeders/hybridizers can do. I still love it, but hate that it isn't perfect when it comes to health in my location. It has joined some other roses that I love that survive, but that only sometimes (rarely) look ready to face the public, in an area where public appearances aren't required. Chemical intervention would likely remedy this, but I won't use fungicides. Since your plant is own root, it will require time (read years) to establish and show you what it can do in your area. Please be aware that variability in color is as much a seasonal (spring, summer, fall) issue as an issue of age. I keep hoping that in the same way that 'Ebb Tide' takes after its forebear, 'Sweet Chariot,' that a very healthy descendant will be "born" with similar floral characteristics. Comments (28)I too, succumbed to the enabling of The Morden Man and the long, lost Digger Dave. I got 3 tiny Sweet Chariots from the Uncommon Rose last spring and they are all doing well. Always blooming, no BS even though they are never sprayed and it does seem that the Japanese Beetles have little interest in them....See Moreroseseek
