Angel Face and Blue Girl?

Just wondering if you guys can give me some insights to the "true" colors of Angel Face and Blue Girl. Does A.F. tend more to the pinkish/mauve color or is it more lavender? The pics on HMF tended to be about equally divided between the 2 shades. Blue Girl seems to be predominately lavender in all the pics on hmf. Also, are they prolific bloomers and pretty quick to rebloom? Thanks in advance for any advice and pictures you can give.

I have both and even in high heat my AF is never pinkish/mauve...it is always lavender with some darker purple towards the edged as it ages.

Campanula, the thrill for me to find a decent rose at any store in Florida is because I think the box stores and even the local nurseries have bought into the idea that roses don't grow in Florida. One would think the growers would do a little homework and find out about new resistant varieties and old ones that do well here before they choose their crops. They're loaded with KO's, Drifts and Flower Carpet (not resistant to BS in my experience). At Lowe's the few "classic" roses in 2-gallon pots are beat up and mostly not labeled ($7 - $9) or labeled 'red rose', yellow rose', 'pink rose' at Walmart. The local nursery wants $20 - $25 for them in better condition but not great, more if they're on Fortuniana. Since the advent of KO's, other roses have mostly disappeared. I don't think I've ever seen bagged roses at Lowe's. I'm also sure there are many more gardeners per capita in the UK than in the US, so your demand is much higher. I must admit that putting a 2-gallon rose in the ground is quite exhilarating compared to a band. Talk about instant gratification!! I saw a video online yesterday on how to plant a bareroot rose and was amazed at the huge size of the roots. Made the bagged rose I just bought look sick. Most climbing sports of modern roses do not perform as well as the bushes. At least that's been my experience. Perhaps it just a result of my growing zone where winter dieback forces us to start with a severely pruned plant each year? Except for a few, the concensus seems to be the same from most growers. I believe there are many other good climbers that meet your color needs and perform much better.

Here's one of the older gardenweb threads that got me wondering: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/1632371/what-to-do-about-odd-growth-habit-on-blue-girl?n=11 I don't think I worded my original question right though. But I'm having trouble formulating my question. I guess the better question is how often the climbing "sport" of Blue Girl shows up on a grafted Blue Girl rose... and if I should expect it in mine. And how often climbing Blue Girl (or a plant with a mutation/sport of Climbing Blue Girl) is sold as regular Blue Girl.... and if it's a good likelihood that I should expect that in mine. Or if I try to grow it as a climber, is it likely that it will look like a climber? Can anyone gaze into my dormant rose and tell me it's future? :) I guess I could plant it against a fence and just wait and see what happens. It seems like it likes to sport to a climber or become a climber often, so I probabaly should expect it.

Yes, I did briefly (and now even more) worry about overspending on one. At my local S.A tree they have sibling tree cards together. My gal Natie was not a combo. So, Tina, should I just not give the wish list part (camera or skates) but give the rest to my girl? Not give poor little Natie these very cool skates? Boo hoo. Really though, I have spent enough. Or, should I take what I have to the gift Tree volunteers, show them what I've got and ask if it should be split? Edited to add: strangely there were mostly boys left on my local angel tree. I'm wondering if it's because their wish list had some expensive things on it. Not much under $140. I know this because my squeaky butt husband was standing at the tree looking stuff up on his phone and then being embarrassingly loud about it. Or, maybe people just prefer to buy for girls? I did ask the volunteers about the many boys on the tree and she did say that every year they have all been taken up by givers. I'm thinking with all the money in my area of Florida combined with the large percent of snowbird wealthy retired people that angel tree kids around here tend to get overspent on. I do think it's a bit more normal. My husband along with others does a toy drive every year and just off that one place three large truck loads of toys will go out. There are hundreds maybe thousands of such toy drives in my county. Mtn, I have always in the past just given money to different causes at Christmas. This is my first time actually getting a kid, a kid with a name and sizes and wants. It's so very addicting!!! In fact it's even more than that as I'm an empty nester. I don't have any kids to buy for and that bites.

I have AF also. Very lavender. I've really never seen it with pink or pinkish.

Susan...she is a beautiful rose for sure. I'm just now adding some lavenders to one of my front beds this year. Can't wait to get them all planted and see how they do this year. Hope to add some yellows to my front as well. Thanks for the pictures! April

u r welcome April ( beautiful name). The second picture shows Blue Girl on the left. I love the Lavs, also. Can't wait for spring!

I love my AF. For me she is not prolific and sometimes is puny. I replaced her 2 years ago. If I lose her again...I will replace her again. Love her lavender color and scent.
Another lavender I now love is Enchanted Evening. Extremely prolific and smelly. Grows upright and is a taller, larger bush than AF. EE has not had any BS.
Another lavender I adore is Neptune. Never pink, always a clear lavender. Also smelly.
What other blues do you have???

Thanks Susan for the name compliment...I always tell people i'm April born in August....My sister was born in April and BEFORE me so i've never understood how she didn't end up with MY name! LOL. And I kinda figured you meant the 3rd one. :- )

Artemis...thanks for the info. I went ahead and bought it and am anxious to see how it does for me. I also have Enchanted Evening and Lavender Simplicity both coming next month. Can't wait! These are all my very first lavenders so I can't wait to see them all in bloom. COME ON SPRING!!!

Angel Face normally opens a bright red/mauve and fades toward lavender or light purple. Sorry, I'm not that good with color descriptions.

Here, the blooms vary with the weather, but some things you can count on:

many blooms
frilly edges
nice fragrance
two tone with darker edges
beautiful color (whatever you call it)

April, I'll be interested to hear how you like Enchanted Evening. I love it...lots of compliments. Big, tall and upright with huge purple blooms. Nice.

Artemis, I'm not April (i'm her sis n law and flower buddy) but I loved Enchanted Evening last year. It did bloom bunches and I luuuuuv any shade of purple. Miss April is finally coming around to at least one shade of purple. ha ha. Judy
