Tell me about Night Owl (climbing)

Does anyone have this rose? I'm thinking of buying it for this Spring -- it is a climber, new since 2007 I believe. Color looks beautiful in photos I've seen.

If you have it, can you tell me anything about it? Size (is it really as huge as everyone was thinking it might become - both height and width), size and hardiness in zone 5, compact/tify or sprawling, fragrance?, any photos you'd care to share -- is the color the same as photos online?, growing specifics, etc. I'm really quite interested in the rose, but I'd love to get people's impressions first?

The color is beautiful-it really is that nice deep purple. We have it on a fence so I can't really talk about the height. It has filled out the fence sections very quickly, though. Nice fragrance. Seems to be always in bloom. It had little dye back last winter, even though we had a horrible winter (our climbing Angel Face had to be cut back real low). I'm in a zone 7a. I would definitely recommend it.

I've seen it and it is striking and beautiful. Might have to protect it in afternoon sun though, which is the only reason I don't have it (yet).

For me it bloomed in the second year and not on the top only, but it certainly is a bit more moody rose, that does not take well to replanting and pruning (at least for me that was the case). It is nice, but I think there are better white (or bright pink) climbers out there. For example, White New Dawn or White Eden (Palais Royal) would be on my list before Iceberg, or one of the white noisettes.

I drove down to the Farm Center today to buy this rose, but they had already closed (darned Daylight Savings time messes with my sense of time). Anyway, I got out and looked through all the roses. They got more in stock. There are three Night Owls left. And then I spotted another rose two pallets over. WOw! It was the most beautiful red I had ever seen! The rose is a large shrub rose called "Hot Cocoa". Oh boy! I am going back tomorrow. If the roses aren't too much, I hope to get two of them and one of the purple Night Owl. If they are too much, I will have to decide. Can a person be FICKLE with a rose??? :) ~Annie

My first post on gardenweb. Bought one of these at Al's Garden Center. It looked like a pretty nice rose to have survived to be among roses nobody wanted selling at 50% off in November. it still had a couple flowers on it and their color matches the picture. Based on people's comments I won't be shocked if the color is a bit different in its new home. I got this to solve my "too much pink" problem. I had a Love Song Rose, a couple of Encore Autumn Royalty Azaleas, and a Chansonette Camellia all in the same general area. In November, the rose and azalea still had flowers and the Chansonette was already in bloom. This created a big blob of pink to lavender color in a contiguous area which I found unattractive. (I have concluded that a rather unaesthetic arrangement of flowers is to have similar but slightly different color flowers in close proximity, with it being even worse if they are different species. I planted this rose in place of one of the Azaleas and my hope is it will do a good job of breaking up that "big blob of pink-lavender" effect in that part of the garden, while still being a color that doesn't clash with those others. It might not have been much of an issue in future years because I suspect roses and azaleas don't typically still have flowers this late in the year, and the Chansonette is brand new and I think it is blooming prematurely due to being on an earlier blooming cycle at the nursery it was grown at than when it would normally bloom here (Some evidence for that is the fact that I planted one Marge Miller Camellia in spring, one just recently, and the one I just planted has almost completed blooming while the one I planted earlier, which I presume has had time to acclimatize to the blooming cycle where I live, is only beginning to bloom now). But in case all these flowers do overlap again in some future years then planting the Night Owl should address the pink blob problem. I knew nothing about the rose when I bought it, but I am pleased to learn that it is a rebloomer. I see that this rose is supposed to grow tall (8-10 foot) canes. It will be taller than the flowers around it, but I think that will add some appealing texture to the garden.

Eastern Screech-Owls do have a call like a whinny, so you're likely correct. Probably not mating now, but pairs do maintain contact by calling to each other. Keep an eye on those woodpecker holes, and you might get lucky with a sighting. -O-

I had this rose, gave it away. It did alright the first year, but was really leggy and lanky. It died to the ground completely over the winter and never really came back. That said, a roser from Milwaukee took it and is happy to give it the babying it needs. I wasn't, and I don't miss it.

It will never be much of a climber here in zone 4 because
it dies back to almost the ground each winter. It also isn't terribly healthy if you don't spray. I keep threatening to get rid of it every spring when I have to prune it down to a couple of inches of live cane, and at the end of the summer when its leaves are blackspot-ridden.
But the deep purple color is amazing, so it is still in my garden. I have moved it a couple of times, hoping a new site will encourage better health, but it just doesn't amount to much. I do so love the intensity of the purple blooms, which in my soil are so dark they approach black-purple. (I have seen it grown elsewhere and the blooms were reddish-purple). I'm hoping 2010 will be its redeeming season because I've already given it 5 years....(yes, I am a 'softie' who hates to shovel-prune).

Wow!! Celeste - looks gorgeous!!! Have you ever thought of growing it in a large pot so you can overwinter it in the garage??

IF I had a garage I might consider growing it in a big pot,
but unfortunately I do not have a garage here. (And that irks me because our cars have to be cleaned of snow & ice
all winter long). So its on its own out there in the deep freeze....along with the cars. LOL
It IS really pretty when it has clusters of those deep purple blooms and few other roses look like it which makes me want to give it another year. It is so hard for me to part with a rose that pretty.
