My (cut) roses all have little growths in the middle of the stems

Is there any way to replant these to get a root system?? Also, one of the blooms is a double bloom, like the image ( NOT MY ROSE )
So, if i were to be able to get a root system on that flower, would some of the buds likely have similar mutations??

Confused - are you saying that other blooms on the same stem are single (5 petals)?

I think the OP is referring to the bud eyes at the bases of the leaves swelling and producing new growth.

Florist roses are grown in ideal conditions with perfectly controlled levels of temperature, light, most always massive amounts of pesticides and fungicides, and they are pumped full of nutrients to incredible levels--pumped so full the dormant bud eyes at the base of the leaves will start growing before the flower is finished.

You may be able to root the stems of those roses--one method is to get a clear plastic cup, add damp (not wet) potting soil, cut off the spent flower and put the stem in--then put the cup and stem into a large clear plastic bag and seal it up, and put the bag in a brightly lit (not direct sun) area kept at a comfortable temperature (72F or so). That's one way to root--there are many ways. The stem may root or it may not. The reason for using a clear plastic cup is so you can see roots if they form.

How the rose plants will perform in the garden is another story--they might be great, or they may be awful. Florist roses are specially bred to be florist roses, to live in a shade house or glass house and be sprayed with chemicals. There is a difference between a florist rose and a garden rose--one is intended for the florist trade and the other for gardeners.

The flower will likely be a slightly different color because outside in the garden the conditions are not the same as they would be in a shade house or green house where most florist roses are grown.

Many of mine do that every year. If you've planted the bud union below the soil surface that growth may be from it or portions of cane below the soil surface. Many of my roses pruned so far this year had to be pruned down to the soil surface. Further inspection shows they've all survived and none are root stock. When I come upon one that appears dead, I cut it back to three or four inches and wait until mid May. If nothing is showing by then, chances are it's dead. If fast growing long canes with small leave grow on the few budded roses I have, I search for the source. If below below the bud union, it's root stock, If above it, it's good growth. All may not be lost yet. Wait a while to see what happens and don't disturb the plants. Digging them up often stresses the new growth and causes the bush to die.

Evidently it is normal for that variety. Do you know its name? It sounds like a climbing rose that could use a wide trellis. But some of these can be grown as shrubs. Assuming that your variety is a large shrub or shrubby climber that makes canes 6-8' long, here is how I would prune. Don't take new basal canes down to the base. If you are growing it on a support such as a fence, fan the long canes semi-horizontally and tie them down. If you are going for a stand-up shrub, cut the long canes back to 3-4' after blooming. Then each should produce two or three lateral shoots. Cut these back after blooming so that two or three leaves remain. After a few years you will have a denser, better-behaved shrub. Prune to 4-5' in spring. However, during fall in zones 7-4, I wouldn't do much pruning at all, because the new growth appearing in October would probably be killed back. Maggiepie, I don't know if this works for cutworms but I want to try it: "To keep cut worms from cutting off individual plants simply push a small stick a couple of inches down on each side of the plant stem. a cutworm eats around the stem and this will prevent them from doing any harm to the plant. Hi Kmarissa! Are those window boxes moveable? I have window boxes too but I have liners inside them so I can remove those and plant and such. Makes it much easier. If they are then you could either put the liners, plants and all, inside an unheated garage or you can sink them into the ground somewhere in your garden for the winter. Make sure there are good drainage holes in your liners either way so they don't rot. If you put them in a shed or garage you have to remember to give them a little water each month. I get plenty of snow here so I always put a shovel full of snow on the pot tops when we shovel. They don't need a lot of water but they will need some. If you sink them in the ground outside they'll be fine with whatever rain or snow they get over the winter. If they are not removable then I'm afraid your best bet is to transplant them into pots of some kind and then winterize the pots. I don't think there is anyway they'll survive up in the air like that through a freezing winter. With so little soil it will undoubtedly freeze solid and kill the roots. Here are some hints on potting roses up. Always make sure you use good light weight potting soil that drains very well. Make sure your pots have several good drainage holes. If they only have one in the center drill in two or three extra ones around the outer edge or lowest spot in the pot. Never use the trays that come with the pots. They hold the water in the pot and the roses rot. Put the pots up on wire pot trolleys or blocks so the bottoms are off the ground and the water can drain freely from them. Pots will always dry out quicker than the ground so watch them closely for water, particularly when it's very hot out. Because you have to water pots more frequently you will also have to fertilize them a little more often too. All that good drainage will wash out some nutrients. Any good well balance fertilizer will do. I start out with a slow release in the spring and then again maybe the beginning of August. In between I use fish emulsion and Miracle Grow liquid foliar feeding. For rooting cuttings I use 16 oz. clear plastic cups with a hole in the bottom. With the clear cups you can actually see when the cutting has rooted without having to disturb the soil. I use Seed Starter soil instead of potting soil because it's much lighter weight. I leave them in the cups until the bottoms of the cups are full of roots before moving them up to a 1 gallon size pot. The one gallon pots then get sunk into the soil in the garden and buried in leaves for winter. Make sure you put up markers where you've buried them. The first year I didn't do this and come spring I had a heck of a time finding where they were and then not breaking them when I dug them out.

Limesmoke, some roses get split (double) or "confused" centers, but I don't think it is a genetic trait (maybe Kim or one of the other hybridizers will comment). It isn't usually desirable, although some people like it. My Moonstone does it all of the time, but it shouldn't, and I will be rid of it this year.

It is possible to root your cut blooms but it has nothing to do with the growth buds you see on the stems. Roses store energy for growth in their canes. Your cut roses are using that energy to produce side growth. Once it uses up all the energy it has they will die. To root the cutting you would need to cut off the blooms and prepare the canes for sticking in soil. The roots would form at the lower part of the stem beneath the soil line. There are many threads on the Propagation forum that explain how to do this. It's not the easiest thing to do though, and takes time and practice.

There are a lot of roses that can get double centers. Double Delight is notorious for it. It is not actually two blooms in one. It's just the petals of one bloom that didn't grow or open properly.
