I will be ordering my roses soon how about picking the best of each class for ogrs.

Moss,Hp,Alba, ect,ect,

Well I can only say not knowing what grows in your climate but Moss:
Mme. Louis Leveque
HP would be Anna Sarshach.or Reine des Violette.
Bourbon is SDLM but I'm very fond of Grosse Choux de Hollande, which does repeat and smells lovely.
Portlands, I love both Rose de Rescht and Compte de Chamborde, both are just the bloomin'est things.
I've only seen Pam's but of the Damasks, Mme. Hardy, Hybrid Musk, Buff Beauty or Pax.
Rugosas--Schneekoppe, the very pale lavendar color and the marvelous perfume are it.
Albas I only have Great Maidens Blush--she smells terrific
and is pretty but would doubtless do better with chill.
The ramblers , so many great ones.Ghislaine de Feligonde is a pesonal favorite but Paul's Himalayan Musk is fabulous as is Bobbi James and Rambling Rector.
Polyanthas gotta be Marie Pavie but Cecile Brunner Spray is a charmer.
Wichyrana:Don't forget Easlea'ls Golden Rambler and the Alchemist, such a beauty.

regardless of what the stats say on the soil maps, Strawbs, I can definately say my soil is alkaline - not as much as yours but rhodies and azaleas are a distant memory from my northern childhood - our black silty fen soil is top class for cabbages, celery and onions and sugar beet. Anyhow, unfortunately, I am not much of a guide to soil ph and roses since this is an issue which rarely comes up - at least not as much as mildew, rust or blackspot. The only dodgy roses (chlorotic, needing regular sequestrene) I grow have had too close a brush with rugosas - and one of my only Austins, Wild Edric is definately a pale and pasty specimen....although Compte de Champagne comes awfully close and I couldn't say what its parentage is. Annoying, as the rugosas are generally happy with well drained, sandy soil (I am on calcareous grassland. Of course, I do not have the extremes of temperature that you have so I have been able to adopt a blase attitude to ph as it is practically impossible to actually kill a rose here. Nonetheless, not dying is emphatically not the same as thriving - there are roses which are doing considerably better than others. I did expect china roses would be a bit feeble but have surprised me with their general willingness to grow and bloom - Sophie's Perpetual, Mutabilis and Sanguinea have been stars. Even more surprising, the infamous bourbons do well for me too. I would have to say that the majority of my roses are species or close hybrids although I have a weakness for Harkness floribundas. I am incredibly fortunate in that Beales and Trevor White (2 out of 3 old rose growers in the UK) along with Harkness and Legrice are based in East Anglia with similar soil and climate conditions as myself....and fervently believe that this conflation of conditions has a whopping bearing on the subsequent health of the rose once it is planted in my garden so I think you are right, Strawbs, in pondering specific nursery circumstances before considering buying from them.

Best gardening classes/education?

I'm a Master Gardener. I loved the classes & learned a lot. But, I wouldn't recommend them for a true beginner. At least in the New Hampshire program there was an assumption that we knew the basics. Call your local Extension office. Most counties have many free publication for homeowners new to gardening. They will list what does well in your area, for example, as well as having lots of stuff on integrated pest management, disease control, etc. I don't know about your local office...but the one I worked at also had the most extensive gardening related library in the state. If that doesn't prove worthwhile, your local public library is a good place to start. Once you learn the basics of soil, a little botany, and some common pests/diseases you'll be well on your way. Learning about each different tree/shrub/perennial/annual, etc. will not seem so overwhelming once you understand soil. While you're reading, you can start watching your garden area and making notes about what areas receive sun/shade at different times of day during which months during the growing season, are there any areas that stay moist longer than the rest of the site, and thinking about what uses your garden will have. Also, I believe many gardeners will tell you than the "bones" should come first...before plants. By "bones", I mean any hardscape like patios, sidewalks, decks, walls, fencing, etc. Next, permanent plantings like large trees...then, shrubs (both evergreen & deciduous). After those are decided...then it's time to start thinking about perennials & annuals. So, you'll have lots to think and plan for while you're learning what azaleas need to flourish. Also, ask away on the Forum. Many of us suffer from "Male Answer Syndrome" regardless of our sex! lol :)

Hi, With squash, they will cross pollinate, but not with all types of squash. It sounds confusing, but it really isn't : ) When you look up squash their latin name has two parts. All squash have the first same name Cucurbita. The second half of the name, which is the species name part, can vary. Like regular zucchini and yellow summer squash's second name is pepo. So your Eightball Zucchini's proper full name is Cucurbita pepo 'Eightball'. Sweet Meat's full name is Cucurbita maxima 'Sweet Meat'. So since Sweet Meat and Eightball's second half of their name differs they can not cross. Zucchetta Rampicante Tromboncino second name is moschata so it can not cross with either Eightball or Sweet Meat. Now Scallop Sunburst, Costata Romanesca, and Table Queen are all pepos, so they will cross with each other and Eightball, but not Sweet Meat or Zucchetta Rampicante Tromboncino. Is this all starting to make sense? I hope so. Your Green Striped Winter Squash's second name is mixta so that is a different type that won't cross with the others. Lemon Cucumber is totally out of the pic since it is Cucumis sativus. Not even the first name botanically matches so there is no way. So you can grow a lot of squash and save seeds as long as the species(second name) differ. Oh and remember neighbors who live close by can cause cross pollination. With your Zucchetta Rampicante Tromboncino chances are lower that someone is growing a moschata variety than a pepo type like zucchini. It would still be good to check. Remy

OA, pretty cool, the only thing to change is the size of the cells. If you go to the top, and put your curser on one of the lines at the edge of the cell, and drag the curser, it will enlarge the cell so the words don't overflow into the next cell, plus if you have a more wordy description it will now fit. I am glad you knew how to do an attachment of the excel like this, I could not figure out how to "show" it to you all. thanks! PS, the excel in the example that I use is just a guide line for me, you can adjust it to your own personal needs.

Alba--Maiden's Blush
Bourbon--Mme. Isaac Pereire
Centifolia--Fantin Latour (date is 1900)
Damask--La Ville de Bruxelles
Gallica--Charles de Mills
Portland--Rose de Rescht
Rugosa--Roserie de l'Hay, r. rugosa rubra

Even with protection, HM Buff Beauty did not overwinter for me. I never tried any of the tender teas or chinas up there.

"Best" is relative. Best in Dallas is not the same as best in NY. You should tell us where you are and ask for responses just from people in similar environments (not just zone). Also say what is most important to you--some people don't care about fragrance; others will but up with a lot to have it.

Well, though I do put a priority on fragrance, I don't believe I would carry it that far.

I can't pick a best of each class. Catsrose is perfectly correct that a rose that's wonderful in one set of conditions can do poorly in another, and that people's priorities vary. As she says, fragrance is one quality the importance of which varies from gardener to gardener; disease resistance is another; importance of foliage, habit, hips, is another; another consideration is how much space the gardener has. People's tastes differ: I agree that 'Penelope' is a wonderful Hybrid Musk, but if I could have just one HM in my garden, it would be 'Cornelia' (but 'Penelope' is very lovely!). Most classes don't have one best rose that is clearly superior to the others; and there are marvelous roses that aren't even that well known, but can hold their own with the big favorites of a given class. I adore the moss 'Capitaine John Ingram' and the Alba/Damask 'Belle Amour', to name a couple of favorites. The beauties of roses simply go off in too many directions: if you have the beauty of 'Tuscany Superb', you still will not have the beauty of 'De la Maitre-Ecole'.
