I don't know how pertinent this will be so your search but perhaps Marie Pavie is a candidate. Cold tolerant down to Zone 4 and supposed to be a good bloomer. I don't grow it yet but I would like to eventually.

You don't get rid of a rugosa nearly that easily.

So Julie you like your Marie Pavie? I would love to have that in my garden one day. Is it in your opinion suitable for container growing?

Iceberg has weird issues with resistance around here. Some can grow it completely clean, many can't (count me in this camp). I don't know if it is the particular clones or what.

I like Blushing KO, but for some, the bloom color and form underwhelms. I like soft pink (it isn't white, maybe just as the petals are about to drop off) and it has nice shading.

Take a look at some of the Kordes selections at the Palatine Roses site. Palatine ships great roses, and the Kordes varieties have pretty good reesistance.

I agree with what Mad Gallica wrote and I would prune out the dead parts, rather than trying to mend them. If some of the roots are alive, assuming it's ownroot, I'd bet money your rose will return this spring. Gruss an Aachen (the pink form) is my favorite rose, too, but she sure isn't as carefree as the white double.

I think mad gallica is right. I'll bet the half that's still alive will carry on just fine. I'd cut off anything that's dead and see what happens.

I told Husband when we found BDdC in such dire straights, that we might be able to save her. Our reasons for tying and binding the split in the trunk was to protect the living part. I will be giving this rose a good chance to let me know if there is still life in it or not before getting out the shovel. This rose has been in this corner for 5 years and I really love it there. Thankyou for all your imput. If Blanc dies, I just might replace her. She's just fabulous there.

As for Marie Pavie -- My Marie Pavie is over 10 years old now. I have moved this poor plant from one county to another county and back again, overwintered it in a pot, subjected it to freezing weather, extreme dryness and all manor of abuse while we built the house. When we finally got moved into our new place, it sat in the pot and baked for most of the rest of the summer. When I finally got it planted, I planted it in clay soil.

For some folks, Marie Pavie makes a wonderful pot plant. Mine did when I moved it so often and that was a good thing. Now that I've had it established in my garden for the past 5 years, it is 5' tall and just as wide and is one of the hardiest, disease resistant roses in my garden. That's nothing when you factor in those gorgeous blooms. I do photography and have won several 1st place ribbons with this rose as well as awed my rose society members when I've hosted meetings.

Might I suggest, if you want a good poly that is disease resistant and will stay small enough to live a lifetime in a pot, you get Anne Marie de Montravel. This rose gets about 2 feet tall and is also one of my most coveted polys for disease resistance, strength and bloom. Much small than Marie Pavie, forever in bloom and just a sweet little bush. It is an incredible little rose.

Thanks Julie for great pictures and information on growing the two roses above. I checked out Anne Marie de Montravel and see that Vintage has a waiting list for one on custom root only. Or I could get it from Roses Unlimited. May I ask if you purchased yours mail order and if so where from?

Kate, I thought I just saw Anne Marie de Montravel being offered somewhere. Let me think about this a moment...

For me, there is a long story about Anne Marie de Montravel. When I first started getting into roses, I wanted a small rose bed of some modern roses and some antique roses. I found this one boxed rose at Lowe's marked Anne Marie de Montravel and bought it. When I researched it, I could find only a brief paragraph on it at the Oxford library. I enlisted the help of Bob Martin and he discovered it wasn't available in the US. The boxed rose I had turned out to be Frau Karl Druschki. Many years later I believe it was Michael's that first introduced Anne Marie de Montravel to the US and I bought one.

Michael's is no longer in business but now this little rose is much easier to get. Check Ashdown, Hortico, Roses Unlimited and Sequoia (if this one is still in business). I hope this helps.

Hi Kate! I have the really nice more double (?) Marie Pavie from Vintage. It grew like gangbusters last summer. Great rose! Smells nice too. I'll try to root one for you. You have to promise to root an Anne Marie de Montravel for me if you do get it. I love polys! Next one I want is Perle d' Or. What did you get from RU? I really want Mystic Beauty but really don't want to order their 3 rose minimum with 9$ charged to each rose for shipping. :o(

Good to hear from you. I sent you an email the other evening about the Flower and Garden show coming up in Seattle next month. Heirloom Roses is going to be participating so I wanted to make sure you were aware.

Anyway back to Marie Pavie. Yes that would be incredible! You are a sweetheart. I just received an email from Sequoia regarding Anne Marie de Montravel saying they do have it. So apparently I must add that to my list. I will try to root one for you that would be my pleasure.

My RU order so far only includes 3 Distant Drums and the rose The Faun. I ordered several for other people for Christmas as you may recall. This year I am majorly reorganizing everything so I might be ordering more once I make some decisions about where my current roses are going to go. I'm excited. Just waiting for snow to melt here.

About the two poly's... That's wonderful that you are getting Ann Marie de Montravel! It is just beautiful. Marie Pavie is a very nice one too. Would love to make a trade with you later this year.(Maybe at the Heirloom Sale in August) I also got Distant Drums, last summer from Sequoia. Can't wait for the blooms on that one!

If you want Pearl d'Or, go for it. This rose for me is another wonderful rose. As you have probably guessed, I'm a fan of the wonderful polyantha.

Pearl d'Or does want to be sprayed and will get blackspot and more likely powdery mildew if left unsprayed, but not to the point where it totally defoliates. It's also not a pot rose from the size of it in my garden. It wants it's space. Mine will be transplanted late winter for a spot all it's own. Right now it's being crowded by the even larger Bonica. Both Bonica and Pearl have new homes waiting for them this year.

There hasn't been a poly yet that I've been unhappy with for disease resistance and strength. Some are quite small though, such as Anne Marie de Montravel. The first year or two I will usually cage these tinies against rabbit bite. They've all suffered from being rabbit bit and survived, but I want them to get strong and able to withstand a winter of rabbit abuse.

Other pretties I have that might do good in pots for you are Eblouissant (red), Orange Morsdag (orange) and any of the Kosters, I have Margo Koster. All small, about the same size as Anne Marie de Montravel and all pretty much disease resistant. However, I find that for disease resistance, you can't beat AMdM. As far as the others, Eblouissant can be found (Sequoia has it listed, Vintage by custom root), but is often custom root. Orange Morsdag was rooted for me by a rose group member and I'm not sure if it is still in production, but try RU.

Looks like some very cool events are going to be happening. I'm pretty excited about Anne Marie de Montravel. I need to find out exactly when it is this year so I can be up in Portland the day before.

So we both have Distant Drums for this year? I can't wait. That is probably my most anticipated rose for this spring.
