Dried leaves on water lettuce and Hyacinths

I got a couple of water hyacinths and 1 water lettuce. Theve been in the pobd for about a week now but it hasnt been untill 4 days ago that there leaves started getting dry spots all over them. And everday I go out there it gets worse and worse... Some leaves are totally dried out enough that they can just crumble away!
Will they still live? And what is causing this? Its probably beibg out of the water to long but just started happening recently

Hey, there.It is kind of difficult to say whether they will live. There are several things that can cause spots. Are the spots brown or black or something else?. Were the plants from a pond store or from someone's pond? Did they get completely dried out or were they kept moist? Were they in the sun in the car? Were they left in a car that got too hot? What do the spots look like? Do you see any snails?

There are many possibilities including a fungus or other disease but you haven't given us much to go on.

There just light brown dry spots that just dry out and kill the leaf that it was on. I got at a Nursery. The were tied in a plastic bag with some water in it and put.in the trunk for 9 hours (that may have done it) I dont think the Car got.to hot as.it was a rainy day. Well there not really spots just dry.patches. And no I havnt seen any snails.
Im just gonna get new ones as the leaves that didnt get killed got shredded by hail.

I realise this thread is old but would like to tell you about my experience on the weekend with water iris and koi. We cleaned out our very large pond on the weekend. Everything was removed, all 14 koi safely transferred into another container, all water iris's were broken up, repotted with new soil mix (from our supplier) and cut back for new growth to start everything off fresh again. Water was balanced and left to circulate through the filter for 2 hours. Fish returned to their home to explore. Next morning all 14 fish were dead :( on googling I have now found that the sap from the water iris is toxic. Very hard and expensive lesson for us to learn. I have spoken to our koi supplier and they were unaware of this problem. While I had bought 5 new fish on Sunday the other 9 were large koi that we had had for years :(

First, are they in full sun? Water lettuce do not lke full sun. That will make them turn yellow. Also, they might turn yellow if there are not enough nutrients in the water. You can float them in a bucket of Miracle Grow or similar ferilizer to help perk them up. If that is not the problem, then even if the parent plants never look that good, their offspring should be perfectly normal. They multiply like crazy, so you will eventually end up with more than you even want or need, ;-)

Hi Your main problem will be overgrowth lol. WL will way overgrow such a small volume of water. Easy to thin though. Some better choices would be Cabomba ,Azolla ,duckweed Which will overgrow also but are much more in scale lol. Some emergent plants such as the canna are good to provide some shade. Be sure to keep them in pots. If you have a waterfall it will provide more than enough aeration. gary

I have 1 baby water hyacinth (it is still attached to the mom and it has its own roots) and 5 baby water lettuce (they have between 4 and 8 leaves each and their own roots). I would like to trade for a yellow nymphoides, mini cattail, or something on my list. I can also check your list for something interesting. matthew

Can't really help except to tell you that some years mine thrive and some years mine fit your description. If it helps, the ones at my local nursery have gotten so bad looking that I wouldn't take them even if there were no charge this year. Another "theory" I have is that they are grown in a hot greenhouse to multiply quickly and sold before root development has been well established. Then we shock them by placing them in a colder environment.
