Tall plant with yellow flowers...what is it?

I got this from my MIL about 10 years ago. It grows to about 4 feet in height and gets all those yellow flowers up it. It has a reddish root and pretty much spreads like a weed. I never knew the name of it though. Please help. Thanks!
