Passing Winter Days

Maybe I should say nights, because the day is all too short this time of year to worry how I'll fill the hours.

When I was a child, winter lasted oh, maybe a year or two. LOL. Geesh, the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas was sometimes a decade.

Now it seems much shorter, but I have taken lately to pick out little projects, or pleasant activities to fill the days until I can be outside again, or enjoy the sun into the night hours. It's kept me sane. Or nearly.

I'll have my house project, of course. It always comes after New Year's day. Last year, we remodeled the kitchen, a two month ordeal done from necessity. I also made the five foot braided rug and of course counted birds for project feeder watch. That tided me over until it was time to start the spring crops. The year before I re-plastered the walls in the living room and painted it and we lay a new floor in there with the help of my son who made that his Christmas present to us.

This year, the plaster and walls in the downstairs foyer are on the agenda. I have my second quilt in progress and another planned. I am also going to take some classes in grafting trees. The hours whiz by and each morning is met with some amount of enthusiasm. The problem is, now that I have a rhyme and reason to my projects and allot time to them, I have more projects than time.

I never used to make a specific project a goal for the winter months. Is this typical, or am I become, finally an old fogey?

Before I forget it, I signed DH up for Birdfeeder Watch last week, specifically after seeing Sara the Brit's thanks to you for mentioning it. So thanks from me too, Suzy.

I wish I could remember the quote but it was about like this: "He was one of those who finished college and was content that he had completed his education". I'm sure we all know folks that consider learning a new craft or skill unnecessary but what joy they miss out on.

We usually had some big project in hand at our old house but with lower energy levels now, instead of painting a lovely red wall, we've settled for a similar red for a wrought iron birdcage and some old plastic microwave dishes for plants. Looks great among the greenery.

I'll admit to flitting...once I learn to crochet or batik and complete a few projects it's on to something else. I often return after a few years but not always...I think that intricate macrame wall hanging is destined to be an only child forevermore...LOL. I used to teach myself from books but now with the internet DH is honing his watercolor skills and I'm finding new inspiration for my collage work.

The internet is a double edged sword, though. Hanging at the Cooking Forum resulted in some new cookware, knives and cutting boards...my present to myself. Intend to update cooking skills and recipes if it ever turns cold here...all doors open today again. josh

Long winter nights are made for either watching old movies or reading. In fact, since this weekend is pretty open for me, I'm intending to do a lot of the latter.

And Suzy, i know what you mean about time telescoping. I can hardly believe that it's only a week until Christmas. Wasn't Thanksgiving just yesterday?

Well, my patience finally paid off. I stopped by Sam's today, and they had their fall bulbs marked down to $7.01 with plenty left to choose from. They still have daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, irises, anemone, allium, etc. I opted for a box of 45 Hyacinths, 15 each of: Jan Bos, Delft Blue, and Carnegie and one box of 15 Jan Bos Hyacinths and 40 Jetfire Daffodils.

I just made my 2017 garden to do list the other day. Among the tasks are to rake out/cleanup the beds from winter debris, prune the shrubs and trees surrounding the patio to allow for more sunlight to penetrate, prune all the Knockout roses way back to encourage shrubbier growth, move the 3 Earthboxes to a sunnier location for better production next year, mulch any barren areas, etc. I may also plan some moving around of plants this year to better accommodate their sunlight preferences, and I will be keeping a lookout for more garden decorations like old galvanized things, stumps, etc. We are preparing for 5-8" of snow overnight tonight, but this weekend it should be melted and 53 degrees F, so I plan to do as much pruning as my back can handle on Saturday. Need to replace a bunch of garden fencing that I use to keep our 3 dogs out of the garden, too. I wish that stuff would go on sale ever! May add more Oriental and Asiatic lilies this year, even if they only put on a good show this summer. I found it really enjoyable to sit and think about the chores to do and the plans being made to further enhance the garden this spring. While I don't really have any new beds planned, there's plenty I can do to make the existing ones even better, so I will concentrate on that as my goal for 2017.

RIP Doris...Just finished watching Love Me or Leave Me, one of her best movies imo. That voice! Clear as a bell! We are not far from Carmel Valley, where she lived. There are a number of celebrities out here, all of whom, like Doris, live quietly. About 25-27 years ago we were dining in a Carmel café and she came in with some friends and they sat at the adjacent table. No one bothered them, of course. In her late sixties, she was beautiful. Clear skin, blond hair, and a pale blue and white sweater that set off her coloring. She was very fierce for animals, as a couple of our friends learned. One of my bffs called Doris with a question about no-kill shelters, as her cat had just had kittens. What she received was a personal blast from DD about spaying, and why had it not been done to my friend's cat? Then another friend had a dog, a big Akita, who accompanied him everywhere, usually in the guy's closed Jeep. One day the guy went to the Carmel post office, stopped for just a minute, left the dog in the car with the windows rolled partly down, and DD happened to pass by. She saw the dog and waited for our friend, and delivered him another blast, about never leaving animals or children in parked cars. She literally tackled every animal problem she encountered. She really lived her beliefs.
