Lime Sulphur Dormant Spray concentration?

Hopefully this is the last time I have to ask this. What would be the correct mix (concentrate per gallon) to do a dormant spray of lime sulphur. I want to do a spray that will kill any remaining spores and hopefully knock off any remaining old yucky leaves. Last year I followed the directions on the bottle, but it was not nearly strong enough. I promise to write this down and print it out on a big piece of paper and post it in my garden shed so I don't have to ask again.

Bet, I've been thinking about lime sulphur also. What I did with Daconil was I googled and wrote the company that made that particular brand.
I'm planning to use LS soon too. Please remember to wear a respirator! My Rosendorf Sparrieshoop has tons of leaves on it.

The undiluted gallon I have of the stuff has a winter dormancy spray mix that calls for one cup of Lime Sulphur per gallon.
I don't know if all concentrates are the same.
You need to check if there is a precipitate at the bottom of the container and include an appropriate percentage of it.

Either l/s or copper is a good dormant spray for grapes. Copper can have long-term ill effects over many years if it builds up in the soil. It may also have shorter-term effects but I never heard of any myself. I have been using copper but am switching to l/s this year due to the long-term buildup issue. If you want to spray both l/s and copper I think its OK to not space much them PROVIDED the vines are dormant. But, there should be no reason to do both sprays; if you need the copper for some particular disease just skip the l/s. This year I am just doing l/s on all my fruit trees except the stone fruits which have had a disease needing copper. So, they are getting copper. Scott

I use it in my regular sprayer. The one thing for which you need a separate sprayer is any type of herbicide (like Roundup, glyphosate). That needs its own sprayer, always. Otherwise, I use the same sprayer for whatever, just rinse in between and repressurize the sprayer and spray some rinse out as part of the process of rinsing. Maybe she was referring to the fact that Lime Sulphur smells awful, which it does. And watch your concentrations carefully on that chemical -- there are two methods of applying it -- one intended for dormant spray only, and one that is fine when the plant is leafed out. (half cup per gallon for dormant spray or 1 tablespoon per gallow during the growing season). And DON'T breathe it. Even miniscule amounts are very caustic to the lungs. Wear a mask. Lime sulfur can be sprayed at any time of year (except when trees are in flower to avoid harming pollinators). It is just a fungicide - and a natural one at that - and is used frequently to combat fruit tree ailments that can occur after leafout - like scab. One of the recommendations for treating scab is to spray just as the leaves are falling, as well as during the dormant period and again as the tree is leafing out or until the climate conditions for scab no longer exist. In my area, that was well into June this year :-) It is sulfur that can become phytotoxic to foliage. Adding lime to the mix reduces the phytotoxicity - the more lime, the less phytotoxic the mix. The lime itself has no antipathogenic effect. It is included only to neutralize the sulfur. Copper fungicides can also produce phytotoxic results. But using them at this time of year hardly creates any sort of serious threat of phytotoxicity. Any leaves treated with dormant spray (horticultural oil) and/or copper or lime sulfur fungicides - all of which are considered natural or "organic" controls - are harmless when included to compost in a moderate amount.

You can order it on line from amazon or from the Ace Hardware superstore, and your local Ace hardware may be able to get it for you. An alternative is the pet dip version of calcium polysulfide which is 98% and comes in 16 oz. bottles versus the Hi Yield brand of Lime sulfur which is 29 % calcium polysulfide and comes in 32 oz. bottles. The price after dilution is similar. Calcium polysulfide when diluted is stinky, effective, and relatively safe for humans. Wear rubber gloves so your hands won't stink and wear eye protection, especially when diluting the concentrate. It is very caustic (pH = 11+) and could cause blindness if the concentrate was splashed into the eye. (It can denature protein in the cornea) Other than that, it is quite safe, assuming you are not planning to drink it. (Don't mix it with acids). In my experience it is a very effective dormant spray for roses and fruit trees and bramble berry crops, and has some nutrient value when washed by rain into soils.

Yah, I also worry that all concentrations are not identical, although I suspect that in consumer products, they probably are pretty close.

Do a google search of your product name followed by "label," e.g. Bonide lime sulfur label. Here's the Bonide label.

For some reason Ortho hides the name of its product and calls it something obscure. Oh, yeah, Ortho Dormant Disease Control. I wonder if it's still sold.

That's probably why I had such a tough time finding Lime Sulphur in the stores last year. They call them 'Dormant Disease Control'.

Every brand will be different.

You really need to follow the label directions of the one you are using. In the past, the ones I've used have had different concentrations for different crops at different seasons. There would be one concentration for fully dormant roses, and a different one for roses during the growing season.

More is not better. If the concentration given on the label doesn't work, then you need to try something different, not a stronger concentration of the same thing. Lime sulfur is not a cure-all and using more of it wont' make it work on things it doesn't work on. Too high a concentration can cause damage, to your plants, to your soil, to yourself.

What is it you're trying to fix by spraying with lime sulfur? Are you mixing it with dormant oil?
