Slightly OT-Re: Bog Gardens

Posted this question in the Bog Garden Forum, but no replies. So how about it?

I am wanting to plant a small bog garden. The area I want to build it isn't far from my A/C drainage. It stays wet all summer anyway. I can attach a small length of hose or PVC pipe and water can drip into bog garden helping with moisture that will be needed, especially in our hot summers. So I assume it is safe?

though will your a/c be on that much during the summer to have adequate condensation to keep it moist? also how would you hook it up? i mean my a/c doesnt drip in one specific spot..well best luck to you

1) Yes you can use tap water as long as you dont have any fish or CP's. (Though fish wont really do well in a bog *lol*) 2) I live in TX and we too have clay soil. Best dirt for water garden plants ever! Isnt the water going to be stagnant anyway regardless if it drains? Why do you want it to drain? "Moving water" now that is something entirely different. But for a bog? Use the liner. You kinda have to. Otherwise you will not have a bog garden (the water wont be stagnant) and you will have to refill the water more from it draining than you would just from it evaporating. UGh I say. And mighty costly. 3)What are you using clay and peat moss for? Why would you put the dirt back into the bog? We use pea gravel for the medium in the bog garden. 4) It doesnt matter if you buy chemicals to de-chlorinate the tap water but you may just want to leave the water sitting out for 24 hours because leaving the water out dechlorinates the water all by itself. But as long as you dont have fish or CP's you dont need to do either. It will do it all by itself naturally *S* I still would like to know what you need the clay soil and peat moss for. Im just not seeing the picture here. I hope that helps

krycek 1984, thanks! although I'm not sure about the Victorian. I do believe that when she was converted from a school to a home, the intent was to give her some of the embellishments of a victorian. The bay and front porch do point in that direction. chloe92su, we are hard at work. Should have progress pictures later in the week. DH took vacation this week to paint. Eduarda, yup, that "grandma green" again. Just love it and had to incorporate it. Wouldn't be right not to! So nice to see you popping in. Many of the old timers seem to be missing. irene dsc, the head scratching continues, but getting less as we progress. Thank goodness...otherwise I might have been bald! Will keep everyone posted on the progress.

Thank you Carol and summersrhythm, I agree with the "can't keep up with the weeds" because everyday I do a stroll I seem to have to pull little seedlings out around my plants and they just continue to grow and grow. We live next to wetlands as well and there are tons of native grasses and plants and those seeds end up blowing in with the wind. I would be so much more at ease with grass to smother out some of the weeds. Every year I have a huge job at the beginning of spring. I may want to try that cardboard or newspaper technique next year instead of digging it all up. Probably just use a string cutter than lay the cardboard over the top and mulch. The digging is so much work, and I have 4 kiddos as well, and it's hard to find the time to complete it every year. Well thank you all for your kindness and compliments! The passion is real here. I love browsing this forum for all of the pictures of other people's roses and hard work. They all are so beautiful!

I liked the part ”PREPARING A BED FOR ROSES IS A LITTLE LIKE getting the house ready for the arrival of a difficult old lady, some biddy with aristocratic pretensions and persnickety tastes.” and then all the worrying about how difficult he expected rose growing to be…and the history…and then how blown away he was when his first blooms appeared. Been there, done that. I do find that roses are sensual, in that they stimulate te senses: sight and smell of course, but also touch (thorns), taste (if you go there), and to a lesser extent sound (bees). But I wouldnt go into the areas that he does. i assumed he wrote those few paragraphs to get a rise out of people (no pun intended) or to get a chuckle. Or maybe just as an illustration of how deeply people get into their rose obsession.

The A/C runs a fair bit especially if we are in the 100+ weather. The condensation drains outside into my back yard through PVC pipe from the house and ends in a threaded piece that used to have a short hose attached and that particular area stays damp all summer. I just wasn't sure about using the condensation to water. As for posting in the wrong spot, no worries. :)

It's just water, so you can use it to create a bog garden. The only problem would be that would be hard to back flush unless you can remove the hose. Occasionally you need to add bleach to the line to kill the mold that will eventually clog the line, you'll want to make sure that no bleach gets to the bog.

The condensate is fine in your bog. Condensate is a combination of the humidity and dirt that has been removed from the air inside your home. You are breathing it, it should be safe for your garden.

Ever check the pH of it ?? Would be curious if it picks up metal molecules Might be a problem for CPs? My room air drips into a Gardenia bush which is sensitive to minerals but it grows anyway lol
Have a small area that I allow to go completely dry during winter and then submerged in summer sort of an "Amazon basin" fascinating to watch the plants adapt to the changing conditions . I use collected rain water for the transition which I know to have very low minerals and pH .
Wouldn't think you'd have a problem with the condensation. Interesting idea for a continuous water source. Will it be enough water yo overcome evaporation? Let us know how it works out. gary

Never thought about the pH. Makes me curious too. I thought if usable, why not put it to good use. It had always stayed damp there even in hot weather, but will see if it can 'support' the bog plants. It will be awhile, as have a major project in the works, but will continue working on the plan as everything evolves this year and next. Have always said gardening is 10% work and 90% patience. Thanks for the answers.
