Not Virginia Creeper

I ran across this at the local zoo along a path in a very naturalized area. It is not Virginia creeper. It was growing with a shrub like form with stiff twigs vs. wandering vines. It has a five leaflet leaf that looks very akin to Virginia creeper. It has a small thorn, maybe 3/8" to 1/2" at the base of each leaf's petiole but none along the internode. Twigs were smooth. No fruit was visible.

The soil is very sandy. The exposure was dappled shade with maybe an hour or two of direct sun at midday and this plant seemed quite happy.

Any ideas? Thanks.
