Calla Lily

My water Calla lily was placed in my watertub about 3.5 months ago. It has grown quite large during that time. Over the past 2-3 weeks I have noticed the leaves have started to turn scaly. I fertilize the water lilies and calla lily every 3 weeks. What do you guys think is happening? I add about a 1/2 fertilizer tablet to the calla, do you think it needs more? Or is it due to a pest. That appears to me to be leaf miner damage. It really doesn't hurt the overall health of the plant; it just looks terrible. You can remove and destroy any infected leaves, but there's not really much else to do.

They do damage to some of my plants, too. :(

Can the Calla Lily corms or whatever is the proper term be potted and put right into the pond water

Would be neat I have lots of them to plant

I have had in the past an Easter lily, Oriental lily, and other colored Calla lilies. Needless to say it all ended tragically. With the heat in Houston and the humidity it has taken the life of many of my green "friends" and IÃ¯Â¿Â½ve not had much success obviously until my hubby bought me another beautiful Calla lily (white) about 3 years ago. Obviously it got special attention so the only claim to success is through loving my husband which made it special; which in turn brought it lots of special treatment! It has grown like a weed since and puts out large beautiful green leaves and stalks but it has never actually bloomed that I have witnessed. I have waited patiently for it to start flowering again and aside from the flowers it came with it is just now leaves. Is there some reason that itÃ¯Â¿Â½s not blooming? Is there something wrong with it? Am I doing something wrong? I love it because not only is it my favorite flower but it was a wedding/birthday gift so itÃ¯Â¿Â½s sentimental too! Currently it is inside a big beautiful oriental fish bowl (itÃ¯Â¿Â½s actually a flowerpot but shaped as a fish bowl). There is no drainage and it is watered enough for the soil to be moist but not enough for root rot. It sits in the shade outside not exposed to extreme light. I am desperate to get it blooming after itÃ¯Â¿Â½s been basically in a coma for 2 years! What can I do??

Since your plant was forced to bloom for Mother's Day it may be ready to rest. But if keep warm the hardy calla's do not go dormant. It's hard to tell which variety you have. Did it have a small flower and lanced shaped leaves or big flower with heart shaped leaves? Here is a link to the two different kind. Once you know which variety you have I can answer your question better. In the meantime repot it in a 12in diameter pot with fast draining soil. They love a lot a water but do not like to be in standing water or soggy. Did yours come with a plastic sleve over the pot? These will hold water. Always remove the sleve. Most of these calla below are not hardy. Not really :-) And depending on where in the UK you are located, it might also be possible to grow these long term outside. Certainly the tall whites (Zantedeschia aethiopica) should be able to be grown there year round. IME, a great many flowering plants sold for indoor use are not intended for long term indoor use - mini roses, azaleas, hydrangeas, campanulas, callas, etc. are all sold more like long lasting cut flowers. If they cannot be transitioned to the outdoors (where they belong), then just toss after flowering is completed. Getting them to rebloom or even stay healthy under indoor conditions is best for those with glass conservatories :-) Or greenhouses.

Diane, they can be put in the pond, but just make sure there is no water over their crowns (over the base of the plant where it grows out of the soil).

I grow mine in a bed which I flood once a week, not directly in my pond.

Are water calla lilies the same as plain old calla lilies?
When I was at the Golden Gate Park many years ago, they had tons of them, and they were beautiful. But here in zone 5, you're supposed to dig them up and keep them in the house.
I just bought a water calla today! Can't wait to see if I can actually get it to blossom! I imagine it takes alot of fertilizer?
How much for one plant? Maybe a pond tab every month?

The so-called "water calla" is actually Zantedeschia aethiopica (a.k.a. common calla), which can grow in either wet/damp soil, or in the pond, as long as it's not submerged above the crown, Catherine. Its leaves can be either spotted nor not, but the flowers are always in the white range.

Any others besides the Z. aethiopica prefer regular water during growth and bloom, and otherwise, kept dry.

The common callas do like to be fed, so I'd try one pond tab a month, as you said. Mine in the ground get Miracle Grow once a month. :)

Oops. I hope I am wrong, but it looks like your calla may have a common calla disease called Rot. If it does have it you can expect the plant to collapse into a slimy heap. Your only choice is to throw the plant away, soil and all. Don't even put it in the compost. A lack of calcium in the soil allows a microbe in the soil to attack and destroy the plant. Sandy
