Can anyone identify this orchid, please?

Hi all,

I'd like to greet everybody and introduce myself. I'm Lourdes, from Netherlands. I love to grow tropical plants, among Hippeastrums and orchids.

Last february i ordered this orchid. It was supposed to be an Oncidium "Sharry Baby" with scented flowers.

I only noticed when it got flowers. I'm just a beginner at growing orchids, but this isn't Sharry Baby. I'm still very happy with it, but i keep wondering what it really is. Does anybody knows?

Hi Guys & Gals, addressing the idea of planting Vandas in the ground. Planting Strap Leaf & semi terete leaf Vandas into the ground would be a very VERY bad idea. But Terete leaf Vandas can be easily grown in pots or in the ground. Here is a great exampleÂ At RF orchids in Miami, the entire side of the Cattleya house is lined with these Terete type Vandas. They have the plants bases planted in the ground (only a couple inches are actually in the ground. Behind the plants, there is a line running from one end of the shade house to the other that they are supported by). They have lots of aerial roots growing from the plantÂs stem. Lots of people grow these types of Vandas in pots that are filled with a mix of peat moss or sand & bark or coal. They put a pole or wood plank in the middle to help support the plants as they grow taller. A lot of times they will plant several around the perimeter of the pot to create a great floral display when it blooms. They can also just be thrown on a tree & allowed to grow like weeds. At least when they are in pots, they can be taken in on cold winter nights or when powerful storms threaten. -Ray-

Byron, Are you certain you have the right one. It can be extrememly diffacult to I.D. orchids down to the cultivar with just a pic. What sets off warning flags for me is the white edges that you say different from the Red empress's usuall coloring. This could be a plant with red emperess in it's breeding or some other Orchid all together with similar flowers. Take a look around at some of the online vendors and see how many catts can have very similar color flowers with different names. Then look at some of the Catts that share parentage but have different flowers. After you see this you may discover you have a different Orchid than you think.

I am not an expert in identifying cymbidiums but this one sems to have iridioides/tracyanum parentage. You can look up photos on the Orchid Societies Council of Victoria website. I grow Cym Bennett Poei, which is similar to your plant, and this is one of the first cyms to flower for me. Everyone says this is a cool growing orchid but it seems that it doesn't need a significant drop in night time temps to trigger the production of spikes and it can also tolerate a lot more sun than my other cyms. Are the flowers scented? I don't think there is a need to move the plant into the garage unless you want to protect the flowers from rain or slugs/snails that eat the buds. Cymbidiums like to be outside in a ventilated area. I leave mine outside year round in Melbourne and have never lost a plant to cold winter nights.

It will have flowers at some point. It doesn't look like a garden plant to me but if you want an id flowers will help. Judging by the stage of growth it won't be long to wait.

I want to thank you all! I'd never figured it out myself.
I googled the name you gave me and indeed, got a lot of pictures and it looks exactly like mine. Except for the ones on the pictures looking a bit whiter than mine, but i guess that could be due to the orchid having less intensity here at my home. Here i grow my plants (so far) without using any grow lights, etc. In one of the descriptions i read was told that this flowers were scented. Mine aren't. But again, it could be due to not having 100% ideal growing conditions here at my livingroom.

Give it a couple days. That looks freshly opened. Flowers that JUST opened will sometimes have a hint of chlorophyll (green) left from the bud development, and scent usually doesn't appear for a couple of days. It'll be perfection in a day or two.

I was logged in to tell you it has become indeed whiter AND it has a great scent. Well, a bit of an uncommon one. I would not know how to describe it, but very nice indeed. Thanks again. Now i'm 200 % sure of which orchid i'm growing :-) and i'm even happier with it!
