A Day With Chihully

I had been promising myself to go up to The Bornx since June to see the Chihully Exhibit distributed over the 250 acres it was a daunting task but worth it. It closes next week and I would have kicked myself if I missed it. A very hot ticket the usually half empty Metro North was standing room only and I've been told it's been that way all Summer. I've also included a link at the end to more shots I took about 400 have edited about 40.

I dont know what it is but I loved it.What a fabulous assault on the eye (thats a complement btw!) They are mesmerising.!I loved the one with the 3 swan like figures.The colours are JUST FANTASTIC

anyone who loves chihuly should see the largest permanent collection of his work located at the oklahoma museum of art. in oklahoma city oklahoma. it's amazing. and standing next to a 100' tall work that dangles from the ceiling when you enter is a real amazement. anywho, i just wanted to pass around the word in case anyone comes this way on vacation or for a trip to the bombing memorial be sure to see it since it is right down the street it will rock your socks off!

Monique- Forgive my tardiness! I waited entirely too long to view your pics! BEAUTIFUL!!! I of course love all the pics but there's something about that one of the digitalis and tulips that strikes me(I'm a sucker for digitalis-such a cool plant). Just gorgeous spring greenery in every pic! On the other hand, I can't help enjoying Les petting the off limits caterpillar; ) He's such a rebel, lol. So did he get escorted out? I'm sure they have a camera pointed at that exhibit you know; ) That frog kind of scares me. Sorry it took me so long! ~Babs

I go to both of those malls all the time. During daylight hours, I don't feel unsafe at all (and I'm kind of a ninny when it comes to those kinds of things). Downtown Seattle is actually less safe. But yeah, if you feel unsafe, then you feel unsafe. I'm afraid at that point you may as well not do anything in that area. I'm honestly not snarking, but just mean that there are shootings happening just about anywhere, in any city. I remember being in Toronto when there was a mass shooting in their mall. Canada is very low on gun crime and this was in 2012, waaaaay before the pandemic sparked rising crime rates. But I digress. That second mall I mentioned -- The Landing in Renton. It's by Boeing field, and caters to the well paid employees that live and work there. It's a very different area from other parts of Renton. Or if you're willing to drive about 15 minutes, go to Bellevue Square Mall. Very posh and safe. It's a normal mall but a tiny bit more upscale (like, you're not going to find a Sears or JCP there). There's a great art museum right across the street and tons of restaurants. Just down the street from it is the verrry upscale Bravern Mall (think Barneys, etc). Just down the street in the other direction is "Old Bellevue". More quaint with smaller, more local shops and restaurants and stuff. Very pretty. If you walk to the end of that street you get a great view of Lake Washington. And there's a really nice park that's just between that area and the mall.

This is a personal opinion, and many may disagree, but I find the work of artists who are perfectly well adjusted mentally/psychologically has very little to say. It might be very decorative on some level, which is fine, but I think an artist needs to be more than a good technician. This idea is borne out by personally knowing artists who in the 90s were prescribed the serotonin reuptake/norepinephrine reuptake/dopamine reuptake inhibitors, etc., for dysthymia, depression and anxiety. I took a number of these agents in the 1990s and early 2000s. They work well, they have a wide and adjustable therapeutic index and the side effects (some of which are significant), do not always cross over between drugs, so you can usually find something that works. I felt much better on a couple of these agents. But it really killed my creative impulses. I didn't need creative impulses much at the time, I wasn't trying to concentrate on anything creative. I know several artists who said these drugs eliminated their ability to create, I knew a writer who had a complete block. "I feel great" one of them said, "But I don't feel like me." If your work is based around creativity, you need whatever it is that makes you creative to work. Sometimes you can make a balance with agents like this where you knock down the negative feelings enough to be functional and feel a little better, but leave enough of it there to keep you creative.

Pam Assault on the senses yes but I must admit I like it less than I did years ago when I first saw some of his work. Accept for those large magnificent bowl figures that were in the Nolan Greenhouses I would pay a mint for several of them. the light play in them was mesmerizing and I don't mesmerize real easy! Just glad that The NY Botanical Gardens made some money off this they have a huge budget but also tremendous expenses in he garden and all the research projects they sponsor!

Thank you, I really enjoyed that.

When my dad was sick last year, I set up a secret lunch with some of his friends; a last visit before he passed away. The lady that hosted, had one hanging in her dining room. I loved the way it looked, and didn't know it had a name.

Did you see or get a picture of the low growing white rose garden with the vertical deep blue Chihuly installation?
The white rose garden appeared on some commercials for Saturn/NYC on Project Runway where Kara Janx was driving to the garden and some pix of her walking through the rose gardens and in one two or three second clip there were blue vertical glass pieces (obvious Chihuly) in the background.
Thank you for the photos. A few are similar to what he did at Atlanta Botanical Garden, but mostly different-evolving.
I look forward to seeing them in their glory at the library a bit later this week.

What a fabulous combination -- a world-class garden, a master glassblower who does bold installations, and a master photographer to capture the light and color just so.

yes it's seafoam above the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden it's on the Gallery Page blue spires rise out of a ring of sea foam bushes large blue globes in the center.

Joe those are all so beautiful, I can't imagine how a mind like that could rest with all that beauty in his mind just waiting to be created, magnificent. I think my favorite piece is the silver star.

Joe, it is nice to see a different exhibit than the one we saw in Atlanta. He used red glass candles in Atl. Your talent is perfect to show his work.

I had the pleasure of seeing a (small, I'm sure, compared to what they have in New York) exhibit of his a few years ago at the Joslyn Art Museum here in good ol' Omaha, Nebraska. I was totally awed. They purchased one of the ones that you said looked like a tower of chocolate balls for permanent display in the main foyer. It is so amazing. I always wonder how they clean it???? The selection of his bowls and other pieces - just too exquisite for words. The pictures truly don't do them justice - I can't even imagine what they must look like in person. I love the blue ones - my favorite color in the whole world.

Question: What happens when bad weather--thunderstorms, winds, etc.--shows up? Is there a plan to deal with breakage?
