It appears to be the fruiting body of a mushroom? If so, just an indication that there is decaying organic material underneath the soil. Not a problem and it will go away shortly.

its either from a dead buried root of some removed tree ...

or decaying material in any compost that was put down for the sod ...

or.. it came with the cut sod ...

is that really newly laid sod ... lots of brown in it...

I found some of those mushrooms in my front lawn yesterday; I see them once or twice a year in various locations, usually in damp conditions. The color varies -- shades of yellow, orange, pink. The caps are 1/4" or less, and the stems may be 2-3" or more.

The areas where I see them do not have any obvious lawn problem or disease.

Thank you for the responses. I do think it is the beggings of mushroom growth, given all the moister. Yes, it is new sod...trying to keep it well watered and fighting the brown!! I even put Miracle Grow on it yesterday. Thanks again.
