New Orchids from NY State Trip

I bought two new orchids while in Ithaca, NY. If you can help id them further, I would appreciate it. Also, I'm new to Miltoniopsis, so any advice will be great.

The phal is from A Orchid Place.

boy they are pretty!

The others will chime in (i'm still a newbie and I'm not very good at this) However... this is what I can say:

Orchid #1 looks kind of like Baldan's Kaleidoscope or a similar cross. But if it's not labeled, it's hard to be exactly sure.

Orchid #2: sorry, can't help!

So, I'm guessing that you like yellow and fuschia... I agree with Debbie that they're both very nice and that #1 looks a lot like Baldan's Kaleidoscope. You can't know for sure, but odds are. I also can't idenfity the second one, but I can tell you that its culture can be summed up as humid, intermediate-cool, humid, good light and did I mention humid? I may be overstating it a tad, but you should know that I grow these with my Masdevallias, which is the only place where I've been able to keep them happy. Silva orchids may not have a red phal, but they have the most beautiful Christmas red Potinara Redheart "Neptune" that I ever saw. Carter and Holmes wanted $75 for their red one, but Silva only wanted $35. My plant is fully grown now and I get six or nine gorgeous red flowers every year. Parkside is well worth the effort to see. The six greenhouses are all neat and clean, and the plants are meticulously well groomed. The staff is very patient and helpful. They have far more plants than they list on their website. Thirty-five dollars may seem like a lot of money, but a healthy plant doesn't require money spent on insecticides and weeks of trying to eradicate a seige of insects or weeks of trying to coax roots on a plant that was overwatered, or months of patiently waiting for a flower spike.

Here you go Becky-- if I remember correctly they do a page-- with all the contest winners including the ones using specific commercial products like Pillsburg ready crusts & Eagle brand c.m.--at the end of the fair too. This site they add each day's winner -- but late in the day-- I'm waiting now for today's-- a German Potato salad.

Deee, We're in ARLINGTON. The real estate in Manchester is a little too rich for us. I happen to like winter. The problem with so many people is they hide from it, but people up here PLAY in it. There are snowmobile tours that can take you from Mass to Canada with stays in B&Bs and nice restaurants. And there's NOTHING like October in Vermont!!! And give me a BLIZZARD over a HURRICANE any day! I hate the summer heat though. That's why I like it up here. The average summer high is only 80 degrees. And another thing about here that even when tourists come up, the traffic is still less than 10% of the "normal" traffic in the NYC area. "Rush hour" for us is waiting for 5 cars to pass by before you can pull put onto the highway.

Thanks, they are nice. Actually, I'm not the biggest fan of yellow, but I have several pink and purple color orchids, so I wanted to change it up a bit. The only yellow orchid (not in bloom now) I have is the masde. Thanks for the culture sheet as well. I did read up on them an saw they love humidity, which is fine.

They're very lovely! Nice choices!

I'm with you on the color thing... I like to have a nice spread, not all one color. When I'm choosing new orchids this September, I'll be keeping in mind the colors I already have.

I've heard and read that Milts prefer lots of humidity, so they're probably not one I'd get for myself.

Thanks Jodik. Any ideas of what you will be getting in September? I may go to a "potting party" through my local orchid society next week. I still have to find out what the price range is, b/c I don't know if I really should be spending the money.

Go to the party. Usually plants at OS meetings are 'dirt cheap.' Usually large and well grown.

While I have no idea of actual variety or color, I do want to get a new Phal... I'm also on the lookout for a Catt or Mini-Catt. I also like Oncidiums and Cymbidiums... actually, I like most orchid types, so choosing will be difficult!

Definite on a Phal, maybe on a Catt, and after those, I really don't know... I've got a tentative list of types to watch for, and other information to consider... I'm sure to have a good time drooling over all the selections!
