rose-like shrub with thorny fruit

gorlash

I shot this last weekend, in the same wooded area (in Sunol Regional Wilderness, central Cal.) where I found the Miainthemum last weekend. It grows here as a small plant, rarely more than a foot or so tall, but is widely distributed.

I have also seen either the identical plant, or a very similar one with identical fruit, growing in full sun in Mission Peak Regional Park not far from here. There, it grows as a large shrub up to several feet tall and wide.

This It has a leaf very similar to Rosa woodsii and certain other roses, but I don't really see any California roses with thorny fruit, so perhaps it's not a Rosa at all ??

Anyway, here are photos:

a nice shot of the stem spines - petting is welcome!!

a couple of other nearby examples of full plant, but no fruit
