What a lovely combination with ZD. I don't see any sign of balling either. Prettier than many other pictures of CS I've seen.

What I found was to cut the blooms when the sepals are back but the petals aren't unfurled, then remove two layers of petals....and get wonderful, clean blooms to use in bouquets (especially Bridal bouquets.) It's good to have so many petals that they open with petals to spare.

I decided on LULLABY (Polyantha, 1953) which has the most exquisite quartered little pure white blossoms with emerald green button eyes that remind me of a miniature Madame Hardy. I've actually grown this rose before. I shoveled pruned two of them years ago because their blossoms were only slightly fragrant, and replaced them with Clotilde. Well after years of putting up with mummified foliage I'm going back to the old standbys. I don't use these roses for cut flowers so the slight fragrance isn't an issue anymore. I decided against Marie Pavie and White Pet for different reasons. I have a cottage garden and prefer roses with Old Garden Rose flower form (either globular, flattened rosette, or quartered), which fit in better with the garden design. Marie Pavie's buds are more high centered than I normally like. The mature blossoms are also rather formless and disheveled looking. As for White Pet the growth habit is a wee bit more low and spreading than the petite bushiness that I'm looking for in the typical Polyantha. Thanks also for the Floribunda and Shrub rose suggestions but I really need a Polyantha for the two spots in the front of the flower bed. The rest of my roses are big Austins and Bourbons. I like the contrast between the clusters of little rosettes on the Polyanthas with the luxurious decadence of the larger flowered cultivars. Thanks Carla, Carol, Brandy, Randy, DUchesse, and Predfern. The photos were not taken at night. I looked up the hardiness and I've got it as hardy from zone 6. I hardly ever see any dieback here in zone 7. I forgot to mention that my Clotildes have hardly been watered all summer..I think I watered them twice and we are in one of the worst droughts in recorded history here. It is still blooming away and even though it has been high 80's or 90's this week. It's just a trooper. Here's a front yard pic or two. I planted my front yard full of roses because the soil in front is good, the morning light is good, and I have a less than wonderful view out of my front door so I created a little enclosed feeling with big wild roses. FWIW, I haven't grown the climbing CS but I have the bush form and I agree with Jackie. It ALWAYS balls, even in our mostly low humidity climate. For instance, 40% humidity is "high humidity" according to our weather folks. I just have to think of CS bush form having round flowers, then it doesn't bug me too much. Obviously some folks get gorgeous blooms from this rose, but it might have to be in the high desert to be reliable. I'm impressed that Patrick didn't have much problem with this - I think he's on the east coast. It must be lovely where it's happy, and this love letter is almost enough to make me want to try it in the climbing form. It's also possible I guess that the climbing form is more resistant to balling than the bush form, but with all those petals it's probably still susceptible. It looks like the rose Patrick was talking about is the Dingee and Conard rose, and hmf lists the following vendors: Angel Gardens, Antique Rose Emporium, Rose Petals, and Roses Unlimited. It's listed at one 5b and I've had good luck with polys, so I might give this one a try next year just to see how it does. Cynthia

Hi Juliet and Ingrid-----It has been my experience that it all depends on the weather----Last year it was a very wet spring and I noticed a lot of balling-----if it is warm and sunny the blooms are lovely----

Nice fragrance but not as strong as some of my other roses especially Zeffy-----

Sigh, I miss that rose something fierce. The bushes have been disappointing. Very prone to powdery mildew, which didn't seem to bother the climber. The trick with Climbing Clotilde Soupert is heat. She needs consistent summer heat to open up the fat buds. That is why she is so liked in the Old South. The canes are low on thorns, long and flexible. A snap to train. Foliage is resistant to black spot. The small flowers are perfectly quartered like a miniature Souvenir de la Malmaison. Repeat is very reliable - a constant steady stream all season long. As you can see in the first image, the color is absolutely precious: translucent white blushed lilac pink in the center. Last but not least, the blooms have excellent vase life and the long/strong stems hold the blooms straight up.

I have in my head a fantasy of two climbing roses, one dark cool pink and one white with a pale pink center. I had cut and pasted photos of Super Dorothy and Zeffy next to Climbing Eden. Later I learned of CS.

Voila! Here is my fantasy rose arbor.
Thanks for growing it, I have learned that in my climate it would not work. I will visit yours instead.
