I loved your whimsical garden finds and the bright colors; it seems to suit San Antonio... I just planted 'The Fawn' - I am hoping it will like the cooler temperatures up here; sure is a pretty thing.

Just one more. This part of the garden beyond the arch is planted with colorful foliage plants in grey or white enamel washing machine tubs which can be purchased around here for $5.00. Perhaps it might give some of you an idea of what a nice big pot you could get for the money ...

A lot of my garden is planted in pots since we have about 3 inches of soil before we hit caliche, huge rocks, or solid limestone.

Thanks to all who looked and those who also commented. Like most of us I guess, I garden for myself. I don't have to try to please anybody and simply derive immense pleasure from the creative process of having a garden. I have a couple of garden friends who come over walk around my little yard with me discussing plants and garden design, but I've noticed that when most of my non gardening friends see it their eyes just sort of glaze over. Poor things -- they don't know what to make of so many plants, but they do like the atmosphere they provide. So all that makes it doubly pleasing to be able to share my yard in this small way with other gardeners; especially rose gardeners.

Your roses look beautiful and I have fallen for your phlox.
I found John Fannick's and Robert Poore's phlox on google. Not available in Europe though, as far as I can see.
I cannot find Victoria phlox. Do you know it's proper name?

Daisy, thank you so much. I just looked at your more recent thread with pictures of your garden and it's my dream garden!

"Victoria phlox" is, I think, an old unnamed passalong phlox that Southern gardners have grown for years. It was called 'Summer phlox', 'Garden phlox, and 'Standing phlox'. I feel that the Texas Super Star people gave it the name of "Victoria" as it certainly looks like the same one to me. It also seems to me that the different colored "John Fanick's" and "Richard Poore" named varieties are variations of this old standbye, but I don't know that for sure. I do know that other varieties grown in the cooler states such as "Nicky" will not stand up to the heat of Texas. I tried "Nicky" this spring and it dried up and died when the heat set in. Southern European nurseries are missing a good thing by not offering it.

I've never had any of these heat tolerant varieties seed out in the garden, but not much does as I use so much mulch. I'll be watching to see if I can find seeds on the plants. Email me through my page.

I love your little Fawn. I remember when mine looked like that. Are you going to keep it small or let it get big? I know they sell it as groundcover but mine got pretty hefty over the years.

Kitty, so far canes on my Fawn are horizonal. It's interesting to see how yours has put some height on. How old is it? It's a wonderful rose, isn't it?

Probably most of you have read that I'm downzing sizing the garden as to the number of roses grown. I'll have to admit it made me a tiny bit sad to look at the rose photos from this spring as well as see how the roses in the garden are covered with buds again after my cutting the buds off when chilli thrips were found to be stunting their growth.

But nothing stays the same. That's the nature of this world. I'll still be gardening -- just less intensely ... maybe :-)

But I also have some lovely pictures of my roses which bring me joy --plus the survivors which still have blooms every year are delightful---

I'm just happy to be able to walk around and enjoy the fragrance --and pick some blooms----

Florence thank you, and everyone else that commented, for looking again and for understanding. I often think about how gracefully you gave up active gardening. And if you are still reading this thread Florence I want to wish you a 'Happy Birthday' albeit a few days late. I always remember it because my daughter's birthday is on the same date. So I know of at least two wonderful people who share the same birthday.

While I'm here I wanted to share a sign a friend made just recently for my garden. The garden will be undergoing a big transformation soon, but it will remain a stress free area of my life. I can hardly wait to get started!

San Antonio has a lot of charm and that includes your garden. I enjoy visiting your city whenever I can. Can't get enough of the River Walk. These pics are amazing. I've grown 'Thomas Affleck' for many years and I agree that it is a treasure. Toughest, healthiest, most dependable rose I have. Drought tolerant too. And your 'Duchesse de Brabant ... best fragrance on earth to my nose, and that cupped, nodding bloom form works for my particular taste.
