It's been 99 Years....

since the Chicago Cubs won the World Series, and 62 years since they've won a National League pennant. And you know what? I think it's time or the longest drought in baseball history to end.

As DH & I watched the Mets do their Cubs-like end-of-season collapse I couldn't help but to feel vindicated as I've always blamed them for the Cubs' ignominious collapse at the end of the 1969 season. That year the Mets went on to win the World Series, so if history can repeat itself in mirror image, the Cubs should take it all this year.

I'm afraid to hope. They've broken my heart so many times. And in fact, given the fact that their first two play-off games won't start until 10:00 PM (And what is up with that??)& that's past my bedtime thank you very much.

I know there aren't a lot of sports fans here, but just for me, please send sunflowers, prayers, wiccan spells, or whatever else may work to help my Cubbies make it to the World Series just once before I die.

I'll cheer for the Cubbies, Andie.

I was once on location at Wrigley Field - what a nice venue that is. We were shooting a tiny portion of a short lived series I worked on called "Uncle Buck". It was set in Chicago and I forget the reason we went to Wrigley Field but we shot way up in the announcer box with Harry Carey. What a trip - I almost got a nosebleed.

We used to go to Wrigley field all the time to watch them when I was a kid. My family was divided between the Sox and the Cubs,lots of good fights back then. I hope they win sometime too Andie.

Geraldo, yes, squash were $1.99 a LB at the local Kroger's here in the suburbs of Detroit last weekend -- easily making an average butternut $5 to $8. Food prices are REALLY rising here -- a whole chicken that might have been $0.59 a lb a few years ago is now $1.29 to $1.89 a lb unless on sale. So, that is one reason I grow a lot of stuff. There are many more reasons -- enjoyment/fulfillment, hobby/something to do, etc. What is really sad is that so much good food is STILL being thrown out, as you mentioned with the less-than-perfect squash. Alas, when will we, as a society or as a species, learn no to waste? Allenwrench, you asked about my land, and about what I do with all of the things I grow. I have about 2.1 acres, in an "L" shaped lot that is largely flat, but it does have a bit of a gentle slope in the back, and a low spot at one edge that floods a bit a few times a year for a day or two. Soils -- well, I have everything from very heavy clay to sandy loam, and it changes very abruptly in places. I can, freeze, and dry produce. I've gone extra heavy into it this year because of my concerns over the economy, the "global food crisis," peak oil/energy, etc. Since I can do it, why not? I am feeding not only my immediate household, but putting up a lot for my two sisters and their husbands, my niece with 3 kids, and giving a lot away to friends and other family. I'm trying to be as self-sufficient as possible, because I CAN be. I figure everything that I don't have to buy from the store is that much less oil that was burnt shipping food thousands of miles. My limitation here is that I'm not legally allowed to have animals -- so, this means that protein is harder to do -- I'm trying to grow a lot of beans, quinoa, etc., that are vegetable protein sources. New position of Mirror isn't working for me, sorry. Neither are the 2 wicker boxes...it looks like the LOVELY table has developed 2 eyes over a huge square mouth! And there is too much of nothing on the table. Get rid of the 3 heavy candle holders, the 3 flat balls and the boudoir lamp (or at least swap out the shade). Less is more. Put on one pretty shallow vase or bowl, to anchor the table, with a nicely framed oval mirror behind. (It will not interfere with the light switches if it is oval). That table is gorgeous in it's simplicity. Don't over work it or force it! JMO

LOL, Shelley you said it! Whenever I water my plants and disturb one they come out and stare me right in the eye and, yes, I do start apologizing for interrupting them or calling attention or whatnot. I notice when they're very unhappy they do that thing boxers do when they're about to fight, they go back and forth from one leg to another - or in their case one set of legs to another. I have one living right now in my Madagascar Palm tree and he turns his head and looks at me as soon as I come outside with the hose in my hand. It's his/her yard. I like Monica's because s/he is posing and smiling for the camera.

Don't know what that pink is but it is a pretty one and I think the size of it looks particularly good in that container.......I have a few prolifs every year, but I only try to grow them on when roots are coming off the prolif (indicating lots of vigor). My Yesterday Memories in particular seems to produce prolifs regularly. That's one prolif I planted on years ago, and it took. Since it's one of my favorite daylilies ( scentimental and otherwise) I made room for another one.............I'm a small grower like many, but I consider myself more of a "discerning collector", which is how I comfort myself after looking at my "long list" of wishful thinking........Maryl

Might has well root for the Cubs now. Braves didn't make it this year.....

Hang in there, Andie. I thought I wouldn't live to see the White Sox win, and two years ago they did it, to much screaming and shrieking and jumping up and down in this house.

We lived on Washington Blvd., right on the dividing line of the city, and I was a fan of both teams (though I Loved the Sox). Some of my happiest memories are of cutting class in high school to get on the El with my friends and riding down to Wrigley Field.

Will be watching the games and thinking of you. Good luck! It's time.

LOL! Michael, thanks for the YouTube clip. I knew Steve Goodman in college & he was a great Cub's fan as well as a great fan of Chicago & all its foibles (Check out his song "Daley's Gone" & you'll see what I mean).

Nt boys didn't do too well last night, but then it was way, way too late to be playing baseball. As all Cubs fans know, baseball should be played IN THE DAYTIME!!

NO, NO, NO, Andie! I'm from Philly and this city is practically in shock that the Phillies are in the play-offs. I want them to win the division and then go up against the Red Sox. That way I won't care who wins because they are my two fave teams.

I am in despair--the Phillies are losing 8-3 and the faces of the fans I'm seeing on TV of the fans is sad to watch.

My DH was lucky enough to score a ticket for this game so I know I'm in for a looooonnnnng disseration on the game when he returns to the domicile, groan.

I agree with Pidge that 27 years is long enough - I'd rather not wait 99. That being said, it looks like the Phils' pitching staff is gonna let us down yet again. (10 - 5 final today - phooey!) If it can't be the Phils, then sure, why not. Let it be the Cubs. (But I'll wait for the outcome of tomorrow's game before I start the wholehearted rooting for Chicago. Philly's city motto for all its teams is "Wait until next year," but these guys are holding on longer than most.)

And the Cubs lost the whole thing once again. Talking to my brother the other night, we wondered if there just might be something to the curse theory. Or maybe they just want to do it on their 100th anniversary?

Ohiomom, I'm grinning too. So glad the Yankees got beat this year. I really get sick of seeing them go to the World series over & over & over again.

Thanks Andie ... I am exhausted, playing that game last night just wore me out LOL !

Consider that "3" yankee player's salaries are the equivalent of our entire payroll ... I say way to go Tribe !!

Well being a Braves fan, i can't make up my mind who to root for. always against the Metz and Yankees.
Have'nt been able to follow games till now so-o-o-o will have to wait and decide. usually go for the New England or far west teams. Don't know why.
