making a pond larger and waterfall questions

we have a small pond with a stream and waterfall. I wish to make the pond larger but leave the stream and falls as is..

I have tried explaining to my husband that we should be able to take the liner out of the pond and dig it the size we want and just "tuck the new liner up under the first 3 feet or so of the falls/stream and he feels that we would have to strip all of the liner all the way up the stream or do some heavy duty sealing of the liner that we would tuck under the other that is already there... which way is better?

As long as the new liner is "tucked up" under the stream liner for several feet with the stream liner draping over it and over the edge of the pond, you should be okay, as the water will flow forward.

This wasn't totally true when I did my pond redo...I have 3 sections of liner before you get to the main pond...I sealed all of them but the one that goes into the main pond..it limits how deep I can make my pond because of what you call capillary refill I believe..this winter I removed all the rocks around the top of my main pond..pulled the liner up out of the way...added block to make the pond deeper..put everything back and covered it back up..started filling the pond back up and didn't gain any depth what so ever because the water was sucking back up stream and out of my pond...maybe one day I'll seal that bottom section..but it's ok for now..pond is around 28 inches deep now...hope this helps....I wasted about 4 hours doing all of that work LOL....thought I would save you some time..I got some sealant tape at The Home Depot...expensive...Happy Ponding! Hi there Jane! I have newspaper under the new dirt, it creates a barrier for a while and also kills the grass so if you don't need to dig too deep it makes things easier! I also like how it eventually composts itself so i am adding to the earth at the same time! I used fabric weed barrier near the back of the falls because i have been fighting a thistle infestation for a few years now, my previous neighbour just let them grow and seed and they are so hard to get rid of!! I installed a small stream fed by a large ceramic pot 2 seasons back and made a HUGE error. I used slate and large bull gravel that I gathered from around my pool to line the stream bed. Used a tile hole saw to drill into the lower back side of the pot. Ran my line and tied it into the said pot, fired up the pump, everything flawless, so I thought. About 3 or 4 days later I noticed that my beautiful water lily was starting to brown up. The lily was situated in the pond right where the stream dumped in. After a week or so the lily started to die. Took me awhile do realize just what I had done. Remember the rocks that I said I got from around the pool? Well I forgot that I had sprayed total vegetation killer around the pool to control weeds. Hence the stream washed the chemical right onto my lily, killing it. 2 years later I am still angry about my stupidity. My lily was 4 years old and at the time of its demise was one of the focal points of my 1200 gal. pond. So just a little sad and precautionary tale.

Pond less waterfall spillway feature question

I have often considered a pondless water feature. Your idea sounds great. Yeah, $500 each for the color changing lights would deter me from using them too. Are the spillways pipes coming through the wall or like shelves (sort of like a dustpan)? I don't know if you are wanting to make the spillways yourself or if they are kits. To get an idea, I just checked the Atlantic site and saw the Colorways system. Is that what you are talking about? I can't answer about the LED lights. I don't think the strips are expensive but you have to know how to connect them to a controller of some kind if you are DIY. My boyfriend uses the LED strips for projects but he has experience. OH.. I just re-read your post and you want only information from people who have done this. Never mind. My information would be only from ideas I've had.

That's pretty much how my bog works! Except because of the way we built ours, it's a challenge to get the water level below the gravel level, (waterfall is a little bit too high >.<). The bog water level is above the gravel in a few spots, and it becomes a string-algae-covered mess. But... I still love my bog =D Only thing is I wish it was bigger! Plants take off like nobody's business! We have a triple pond setup -- bog is at the top, then a waterlily/frog habitat, and then a small goldfish pond -- all told about 700 gallons. Note this year we will be expanding the lower pond, and our bog will likely be too small, but we have plans for a supplementary waterfall filter. Here's a photo from last year from our 2nd story deck. In the photo, bog is at the bottom, middle pond is top right and lower pond is top left. The pump sits in the lower pond, then tubing brings it around to the bog via perforated PVC and the water cascades down from there. We put in a check valve in the bog piping to keep backflow from occurring during a power outage, as well.
