If you could only keep 10... what would they be?

I am sure this question has been asked before but here goes. I am trying to downsize my large orchid collection and this thought crossed my mind. It was very difficult to do but if I could only keep 10 orchids from my current collection this it what I would keep...

This list reflects that I am trying to discover what genera will grow and bloom in my conditions (indoors, natural light, low humidity).

Even though your problem for us is hypothetical, Kinsey, it really is hard to do. I have three Phal Doc Charles flask babies, which are doing fine, but which have yet to bloom. I'd probably give up the Chinese Cym to someone who knows how to make it happy, and keep another of the flask babies which I'm confident will bloom in my conditions.

I only have 14 orchids so that leaves two--a Ludisia discolor and a very chocolatey Onc. Sharry Baby (I think), a rescue which just bloomed for me and now has a third spike. Seems kinda heartless not to put them on the list. sigh.

I have ~ 100+ orchids, 13 bromeliads and 6 Marantaceae.

I'm trying to INCREASE all of the numbers!

When I started collecting orchids I in 1996, bought a D speciosum. It went for the then unheard of price of $50 for a 4 to 5 cane smallish plant. The seller convinced me it was worth it. 4 years later, on Jan 1 2,000, it was trying to burst its pot. As I attempted to repot it I could not get it out. I gave myself a nice cut trying to slice away the old pot. I vowed to never have to repot that SOB again and mounted it on a large root stump. This led to me switching almost my entire collection to mounted plants. No more deteriorating bark, no more mountains of old bark, no more repotting bench, no more worry about over watering. I'm convinced that growing these plants bare root, as they grow in nature, is the easiest and best way to grow them. That D speciosum started me on that journey. It turned out to be a D speciosum var grandiflorum which was not know to me at the time of purchase when I knew nothing about these plants. Grandi is the biggest of them all, this thing now has 32 canes 24"to 26" long with 14" to 16" leaves to boot. Its horizontal wingspan is 5 1/2 feet, its 5 feet tall. I can barely lift it. When it blooms on 14" to 16" flower spikes with 50 to 75 fragrant flowers each, it puts on a spectacular display. The number of spikes varies as it has off years but 2 years ago it had 18 spikes. The beauty of this is that it requires no care other than watering and fertilizing. Can you imagine the hassle of maintaining this thing in a pot with bark? 'Gorgeous George' is a member of the family and it will stay with me for the rest of the trip. If it gets much bigger, they can bury me in it. Every time I take it to a our spring show I get huge offers for it but I'd sooner eat dog food for a month than part with it. Even though I have since acquired named, awarded, famous speciosums like 'Daylight Moon' FCC, 'Windermere' HCC and 'Yondi Tina Goliath' FCC, 'Big G' is the one I would keep. Nick

After years of growing various herbs, thyme is the one that has always been dependable, available, and trouble free, as long as I grow it in a pot in adequate sun. I have never been left without it when I go to make my favorite spaghetti sauce. (I can't say the same for oregano, despite its cooperative growth and overwintering abilities). Lemon verbena, despite its weediness, would be my second pick, as I am never without a healthful tea as long as it is anywhere on my property. Since it is so helpful in chest congestion, which is a recurrent concern for me, white horehound is my third must-have herb. Since it can be used in candy (it is very bitter otherwise), I guess it can skitter into the culinary category. I have had it overwinter in the same large pot on the north side of my home for two winters now with minimal attention. The above are the ones I have always been able to rely on; the least demanding, and the most useful to me. They have never died on me from lack of attention or hardiness, or from insect damage. I love basil and cilantro, but have had little luck with them, as they sicken and die on me because I cannot provide enough sun or consistent moisture. Sage grows well for me, but I have found that it is almost as good dried as fresh, and can be purchased in large amounts for use in tea fairly economically. Bee balm comes back for me, but I hesitate to harvest my little stand of it for fear it will give up and not come back at all; additionally, in its early growth it greatly resembles the poisonous snakeroot, which some birds have sowed in my garden. Lovage grew well for me the first year I planted it, but never again. I live close enough to several grocery stores to purchase as much celery as I want whenever--and celery is a staple that stores well. Etc.

Lucky, when I first started out and went beyond the lovely Optimaras I could buy in stores, my first five that I actually sent for were all purple/violet in color. It took me a long time to get over the purple thing! I am still not! My reasoning was that if I was going to go to all that trouble of plunking down hard cash and sending away, then it had to be the very strongest contenders. I just had to explore the purple category first! In fact, when I first heard the word standard, I mistakenly thought it referred to the color purple, not the size! I love the color purple, and it was so ingrained in me that wild violets in the garden and woods are always purple. My favorite color with pansies, also. It is sort of like asking me what color rose? Well, "roses are red and violets are blue ... " Anyway, it is a great marketing type of question that growers like Optimara must ask themselves all the time, because they always offer a basic collection, often, one purple, one pink and one white. Anne, It is nice that you were able to post photos of most of these on a recent thread about what is blooming now! Not sure if I have CrinkleBlue, will be adding it if I don't! In rereading Lucky's query, it sounds like you have narrowed this down to the ultimate basics, sort of a "back to basics" question. Diana and Karin, too, seem to go for the bare bones basic collection. A violet club friend of mine and myself often joke that when we first started collecting violets, we both had only the solid purple pansies! It took me forever to break the sound barrier, so to speak, and buy, oh my, a pink one! Then a wine-red one! That was it, I was totally content for many years with that color combo. Just for fun, my choices are based on extensive personal research of growing out several in each category. This is what I ended up with. For today, my one red would be a true red, (not a wine-red), (drum roll ... ) Stork's Pow Wow. It is a semi double pansy with a distinctive variegated leaf. My one light blue would be the Optimara Manitoba. This is a "back to basics" choice. It is a very early Optimara and a very pleasing, soothing color combo with a good growth habit. It gets big and makes me look like a great grower. My one light pink would be another Optimara, MyDelight. This is a new one. I really wanted a flower that looked like a rose. After growing out many fussy ones, such as Anne, among many others, Optimara developed one that met my need with MyDelight. I wouldn't bother with a white. Although I have several. I would keep a couple of deep or bright pinks like Beauty Goddess or Gentle May. But you must allow me several of the deep, bright blues and purples. That would be Optimara Maui, Lyon's Starry Night Blue, Lyon's Midnight Waves, and Lyon's Simpler Times. Not sure about the fifth blue yet as many are growing out. Several Ness contenders. Yes, I am very boring and basic, but these are the ones I reproduce and keep many duplicates because I also think I have done the research, so this is the basic collection everyone should have. Well, if you really shoved me against a wall, if I could have only one, that would have to be Starry Night or Maui. They are each classics and non-stop bloomers. Sorry, Midnight Waves! But, of course, this question made me go back to basics and scour the on line catalogues to see what basic purple or blue I am missing! My suggestions are varieties that I've noted are good producers and will provide lots of variety in terms of flavor and color: Cherry 1. Sun Sugar Hybrid (Orange) - mouth wateringly sweet, productive, crack resistant 2. Gardener's Delight (Red) - large 2 - 3oz crisp cherry tomatoes, great for salads 3. Black Cherry (Black) - incredibly prolific with good large cherries that have great shelf life Beefsteak 4. Indian Stripe (Black) - Great +8oz beefsteak that rivals Cherokee Purple but ripens earlier and is much more productive 5. Cowlick's Brandywine (Pink) - Huge creamy tomatoes that just keep coming and coming 6. Gold Medal (Bi-color) - consistent producer of delicious citrus-y flavored bicolor Garden Slicer 7. Celebrity Hybrid (Red) - very prolific variety that produces 5-8oz tomatoes with impressive disease resistance 8. Manyel (Yellow) - strong producer of creamy tasting luscious yellow tomatoes 9. Chef's Choice Orange Hybrid (Orange) - America's Selection winner of an tomato plant that produces tons of orange tomatoes Paste/Sauce 10. I haven't been around in a LONG time, which is why...

I'd LOVE to have only about 10 (well maybe 20). There's too much else going on for me to care much about these guys/gals these days. I have about 65 plants, and if anyone wants some phrags/paphs, plus some other stuff, I respond to GW email :)

I now know that I no longer like seedlings. 'NBS' is a mean nasty torment. Near to you and I means nothing to an orchid. 'BS' is a worse joke that they perpetuate upon us.

Really, they laugh behind your back. Once you reach about 65 plants, you can hear them chortle. Luckily I'm down from almost 200. I don't hear their voices so much any more.

And horrors of all horrors is when you repot, and the plants splits in half...NOW YOU HAVE 2! And you have to make a new label and make more room.

Such an evil obsession we are bound to.

Carolyn, I swear I've heard that very same chortling! I backed down to about 50 and the torment stoppped......

But 10? Surely I'd keep the reliable bloomers and stop the science experiments.

I am having a hard time with this one. Right now I have more than 10 Laelia anceps varieties so deciding on 10 plants is going nowhere.

Many of my plants need too much light for indoor growing. Lots of them are too big for indoors. Mounts are hard to have indoors since viewing them and getting enough light to them is a challenging combination.

Probably I would end up with 5 Paphs and 5 Slc minicatts.

Well this is certainly easier than the thread that popped up a few weeks back asking us to choose ONE plant! :)

I'm trying to cut back as well, but only so I can get more of the things I actually want. My problem is, I don't feel good selling anything until it's blooming because a) I can get more moolah for it (orchids bring me one notch higher towards not being under the poverty line) and b) I think people enjoy seeing what kind of flowers are on a plant before buying. Then things bloom and I don't have the heart to sell them. Time to get serious about this.

Soo..if a fire broke out in my house and I only had time to grab ten of my plants, I'd probably snag:

1) Aerangis distincta (about to bloom for the 1st time but also dying at the same time...kills me a little inside every time I look at it)
2) Aerangis splendida
3) Aeranthes grandiflorus
4) Angranthes Grandilena (aer. grandiflora x ang. magdalanae)
5) Dendrobium Peng Seng
6) Dendrobium Tobaense
7) Dialaelia 'Snow Flake'
8) Dendrobium dawn maree
9) Polyrhizza lindenii (just cause that little bugger finally put out ONE root and there's no way in hell I'm gonna let this little glimmer of success slip away)
1. Aerangis kirkii
Luckily I don't have anything too valuable or irreplacible in my collection
