Can you post pictures? Do they have pop eyes and egg shaped bodies, fan tails? Without pictures it would only be a guess.Glenda

I have three fish that sound like your fish. I was told they are a cross between the koi and gold fish. I also heard they cannot reproduce because they are sterile. Mine are dark brownish black and look more golden when out of the water. Like you said if the sun is on them they have a golden tinge. Hope this helps.

She said they are not shaped like Koi. I have two Koi Mutts and they are shaped like the Koi without barbels. One of mine is the dark brownish, lookes more golden out of water and the other one is white with little bits of dark red. Do they look like these?

Hi guys, I'm back. Sorry for the lousy descriptions. I've taken some photos now. Please excuse the pond debris - i'm under construction/destruction as always.

So, Unknown #1 are the black and silver with a little gold. Unknown #2 is a dark brown with fancy tail and has gold in the sun. Unknown #3 looks like the fancy tail but without a fancy tail and almost has blotches or spots if you look closely.

taralynna.......those are beautiful fish. They sure do look like they have some Koi in them...maybe Butterfly Koi. I have a little guy that I picked up a while back. When I got him, I thought I was buying a Koi, due to the barbells and his shape. But he was a solid golden brown, the reason why I chose it. I am always looking for the rare colors. Now I am starting to wonder what type of fish I got, because his body is becoming very fat, more so than that of a female. Seems like he is a mix of koi and goldfish maybe. But yours look skinny enough to be koi. My guess is they are Butterfly Koi, maybe with some goldfish mix. But they sure do resemble my Butterflies.

Oh yeah....by butterflies, I meant the ones with the longer tails. The others seem like regular koi. I see barbels, so they are definitely koi. They may just have come out a different shade. It happens sometimes.

While it interesting to know what kind of fish you have, it really doesn't make a difference. The only thing that matters is that you like them and enjoy them. I have one that hatched (is that the right word) last year and I thought it might be a redcap oranda, but has never developed the wen, but also has a red spot on it's tail which I don't think the Redcaps do. So guess it is just a red and white fantail. But it is pretty and I don't plan to enter any of mine in any kind of shows or competition. Glenda

Unknown 1 is a koi
Unknown 2 is a goldfish

Over time, goldfish fry will turn orange slower and slower, in a pond without culling being done.

The owner could have taken their more colorful fish with them and just left the culls.

This does not mean there are anything wrong with them just that their colors are not what are considered most desirable.

Number 3 is a koi.

The goldfish is a comet which is a common goldfish but with long flowing fins.

The koi are not butterfly koi, they would need long flowing fins to be butterflies.

They are comet goldfish gone back to there wild form. Gold fish were origenaly that color. Selective breeding made them as we know them now. When left to nature they revert back to there wild colors. We had an orchard pond here that someone dumped in there fish. What a mess. All but a few had breed back to that drab golden brown color. Some were quit pretty with the long fins and spots. Very hardy though.

I think these guys are correct about the goldfish but i think maybe the other 1 is a ghost koi. That is a cross between a common carp and koi carp, quite lovely colours. I maybe wrong but thats what it looks like to me. If you find out for shore let us know!

The two fish in the picture labeled Unknown #1 are koi not goldfish. They have barbels. The only goldfish in the OP's photos is a black comet just starting to turn orange.

over time in a confined space with no new introductions and no culling koi and goldfish will both revert to drab olive/black colors and the goldfish will take longer to change to orange.

I can't get a really good look at #2 but all of them seem to be koi. The first one seems to show the shield shadow on the head. I have one like that and it is more stocky than other koi. I call it my Klingon since it looks like it has armor. Sandy
