Name That Plant!

Unknowns at new house in NY

Hi everyone, I just moved from Arizona, to Western New York and find myself totally surrounded by things that I have no idea what they are. I am afraid to let my husband mow and trim until I can ID!!

First one is some tall thick grass like plant about 12-16 inches tall growing in bunches with a very very very strong onion smell when cut (or eaten as one of our friends has apearently been eating the stuff while he was mowing the yard before we got here)

it just produced some sort of bud in the last few days

Our front yard is random grass and weeds, and growing all through the middle is a type of low small creeping vine, almost miniature morning glory like with small white and purple bell shaped flowers.

Third is a bunch of upright almost mint looking plants about 12 inches tall with verigated leaves and dark purple slipper shaped flowers growing in the shade benieth several large trees along the back fence

Any help would be appreciated as the husband has been eyeing them all lately with the string trimmer.

The first looks like garlic. The last one is Lamium, a member of the mint family.

#1 an onion of garlic of some sort....probably garlic chives...save a little pull the rest.
#2. Nasty weedy wild morning glory...
Poision that one...or it will come into your bedroom windows and "git" ya!
#3 lamiastrum....nice neat perennial ground cover type plant. save it.

well.. 2 independent ID's ... if its scale.. its treatable.. but i have never seen such on mature bark ... if its mushrooms.. as bboy suggests.. i think.. lol ... they are living on the rotting wood under the bark ... time is limited ... that is a very bad prior pruning.. i am wondering what the prior owner did to the rest of the tree ... two more pix .. as good a closeup as you can get... and a pic of the whole ... may as well tell us where you are also .... ken ps: why am i wondering if this tree was topped.. or telephone poled ... or any significant construction in the root zone... or all three????

Excellent comments from many especially Worthy but I think the energy code and table above with R-value and fenestration minimums is out of date. NY state apparently has their own energy code and according to this DOE site, it should be the rough equivalent to the 2012 IECC, a significantly better performing code. If the state and local amendments haven't watered it down too much, R-value prescriptions would follow this table: It's good that the state is paying attention to air-sealing. I wonder if the air-sealing is a "checklist" loophole or if they are requiring minimum blower door results. Those on the upper edges of zones might consider upgrading to a colder zone especially in windy or elevated areas. Note that zone 6 requires exterior insulation provisions in the prescriptive table. Because this probably isn't enforced or is avoided with alternative modeling compliance, choosing spray foam for the weaker cavity insulation might improve your airtightness, whether they enforce it or not. There are better ways of addressing overall air-tightness but in our region, open cell spray foam is about the same price as dense pack cellulose so it can be a good choice for better performance thanks to less air-movement.

not many perennials, trees or shrubs... die, simply from cutting them back ... and as you found out ... with no insult to the root mass ... they can grow back to size rather fast ... you will either have to dig it out ... or treat the cut with round up or stump killer ... should you wish to be done with it ... ken

#3 is Lamium maculatum. Probably 'Shell Pink'.

Don't let the garlic/garlic chives go to seed (cut off the blooms) or you will be fighting all the seedlings for years!

Ask me how I know! One year I left the flowers on because they were "pretty". Of course, I forgot to deadhead them before the seeds flew away. Those little seeds planted themselves everywhere.

Hi Castiliana,
Welcome to WNY and our weeds, lol.
The first one is garlic, not garlic chives. As long as you get the bulbus part of the bottom out of the ground, it will not grow back.
The second one field bindweed. It is evil! I'm battling it my self.
The lamium just grows like a weed around here : )

Many thanks =) thats 3 down and about a billion to go. the bindweed is interesting, it doesn't seem to be going anywhere, just mingleing with the grass, it hasn't tried to climb anything, however it does keep springing up in the herb bed along our front walk, at a rate of several inches a day so i can forsee some conflict there =)
