Oh Eden, it's just SO pretty! When I look at the shots I can't even believe I'm looking at MICHIGAN. You are a wonder and the newly paver-ed area is beautiful. I LOVE those pink chairs, they're great; so summery with the white table and plant stands.

I want to see the container with the creepy little guy in it, too... (if you please).

Oh Eden!!!! I just love every little bit of this! Marvelous! I really like the hibiscus on the trellis. What a great idea. What is that feathery looking plant next to the banana? Also, how are you going to set up that bog garden? and what will you plant in it? I'd like to make a boggy area on the top of the hill in the upper terrace where I'm growing ligularia. They never have been really happy there because I can't keep it wet enough.

Is that 'Black Scallop' Ajuga in the pots in that last pic? and what is that big pink container in front of the table?

So now you need to confess, how many pots do you actually have? I do believe you have me beat. LOL

Thanks for the nice comments! The garden is my main hobby - and my passion :-) One of the reasons we bought this property was the existing ash, white pines, and young red oak that made a perfect setting for a garden. The rest was pretty much a blank slate, so it's come a long way in the past 14 years - and there's still more that needs doing... - thank goodness! (I'd be terribly bored if there were no changes required!) pm2- the clematis on the end of the garage is supposed to be Nike (I have a lot of clematises that appear to be not what the label said it was supposed to be!) The color is a bit odd this year - it's usually has a redder undertone - this is what it looked like last year: Perhaps the cooler temperatures this year affected the color....? As for the size and bushiness - I never bother cutting my group 3 clematies back hard. I just trim off any obviously winter-killed bits and trim them as necessary to neaten them up a bit. That seems to work for me to get vigorous bloom from them top to bottom! They get a small dose of clematis fertilizer in late May or early June. I suspect it'll be another two years at least before the clematises on the fence side of the swag will make it up to the chains. I had to replace a few that didn't make it through their first year in the ground (planted in late summer 2010). Thanks for the 'Golden Shadows' suggestion. That looks like a possibility. I actually have a Wolf Eyes dogwood a few feet to the left where it gets a bit more light and moisture through a break in the tree canopy: I'll have to think about whether the two different variegations would go together or not. Maybe the golden one could be shifted far enough to the right to give some visual separation while still screening the shed. thyme - my pruning technique for the heptacodium (and most things in the garden) is 'if a branch is in my way when I walk past, lop it off!' :-) Actually the heptacodium tree is an odd shape when viewed from the side. It is planted close to the old cedar clump so the heptacodium had no room to develop branches on the side closest to the cedar. If you look at it in the picture of the front garden from the road you can see that it sort of looks like half a tree! But if you look at it beside the bench in the picture through the iron abour, it looks perfectly normal! That is the way we most often see it so we don't particularly care about the odd look of it from the side.... I doubt that the heptacodium would snap unless perhaps it was in a very exposed place, so if yours has some shelter from wind, I wouldn't hesitate to prune it up a bit. The clematis swag started as a rose swag in an effort to try to control the New Dawn roses that used to grow on the south gate arbour. I loved the rose swags we saw in England and wanted to try one. It was very pretty; but we got tired of those wicked thorns! The Clematis montana on the arbour had started to climb on the swag so that gave us the idea of using clematis as a 'kinder and gentler' alternative to roses for the swag. So far it seems to be working out reasonably well. Copper pipes are handy to work with! Yes, the fence and gate is pipes threaded through a wooden frame. The gate just after we completed it in the garage: If I was doing it again, I'd have painted the wood the Bonsai green of the dark trim on the shed instead of the sage green we used. It is too much of a PITA to repaint it now! I don't treat the pipes at all - they rapidly turn brown so blend in to the plants and disappear. It'll be many years before the copper turns to verdigris green. It would be easy to make a trellis with copper pipes. The big clematis at the back of the garage is on a tripod I made with copper pipes threaded through wooden stretcher bars. The iron arbour and tuteurs are also things I designed and had a local iron craftsman make for me: I like making things - but welding iron is beyond me! :-) Mario said 'if you can draw it, I can build it' - he was fun to work with but is retired now. Thanks mxk3 - green and serene is my major goal - for the backyard in particular. anitamo - the panel idea is a good one - I've given some thought to the possibility of doing something that would create a trompe-l'oeil arbour/gate implying the garden continues into the distance... I think it would take perhaps more work than I want to do at this point so I'll probably go with a tree/shrub if I can. But I still have a yen to do something trompe-l'oeil somewhere....! Vera, You're scaring me! :-) "Big Head" is definitely going to be cut for flowers or the point before it goes to seed...most definitely...and then, it's getting watched real closely for signs of "bully-ism". Tiffy, The big leafed plant with the purple edge is Coral Bells Purple Palace (at least I'm 90 % sure it is). I did WS Ligularia "Othello" last year, planted it out in the fall, but I don't see it at all this year. I'm not sure if it survived. I did two other types of Ligularia this year, one was "clivorum" rather than "dentata". That one has a little sprout and I'm nursing it carefully (and afraid to transplant it yet. I probably should just go for it and put it out-- but out of all the seeds in the packets for the two different varieties, I only have one seedling.) PV, The shade garden is just starting to do it's thing...the white Astilbes are just starting to come out. I figure the shade garden will be ready for a picture in a day or two. I'm thinking of getting some white Stargazer lillies to put there and move the pinkish/orange ones to the patio bed. What do you think? Drippy and Rosepedal, Thanks so much for the comments :-) I do like that Malva...it's one of the things I can depend on popping up and giving me something nice to look at while I wait for other things to bloom. I have Mystic Merlin seedlings, but I'm still trying to figure out where to put those. I don't want to put them close to the Zebrina because I had Zebrina before, and it seemed to meld into looking just like the Zebrina the following year. Funny how that happens. You guys are just so nice! Thank you for all the sweet compliments on the daylilies. I really felt like I learned so much from you all last year - I am grateful to you for educating me and helping me make good choices! Laurel, Double Almond really seems a good one to me. I took that picture very late in the day, and it still looks good! Debra - thank you!! That was one of my favorite pics too. I am trying to keep the garden all in those colors. It made me very happy to think that you think it looks nice. :) Christine, you are so sweet! I just went out and took some garden pics. I'll post them in a few. Judy: I have been rolling right out of bed and going out in my pajamas with the camera. LOL! This bed is in the front yard, so I'm sure my neighbors think I've lost my mind. Kathy, doesn't that Matthew Martin just blow you away! Me too. I wish they had all looked like that. I'm hoping more will when it settles in...? Hi Rita! :D Lion's Pride has to be my favorite too. It was such a surprise, because I only bought it because my Lab, Angus, has "Lion" in his registered name. :p The picture on the Web site was not that great, but the color looked like it would work with the rest of the garden. Then when it bloomed this year - WOW! I couldn't believe it. Oh, and I've already been lurking here this spring/summer, admiring all your wonderful photos again!

Lynne--I keep hoping the morning glories will flower and look something like yours. Your arbor is beautiful. Krystine--Under the granite is just plain sand. We dug down about 6 inches. Made a frame using wood or metal edging (for the curves), put down landscape fabric then filled with about 4-5 inches of sand. Rented a tamper and watered well then leveled and did it again. We laid the granite then swept sand in the cracks. It seems very solid. We do periodically need to sweep in more sand...just a shovel or 2 does the whole patio.

Chelone, he's in pic #5 down in the left corner, looks kind of like Mary's coffee bean guy there, lol. Here's a close up shot just for you. I moved some leaves so you could see his saggy parts. I hope he makes you smile:)

Deanne, the feathery plant is eupatorium capillifolium 'elegant feather'. I wasn't expecting it to get quite that tall. That ajuga is Caitlin's Giant I believe. The pink container is something I picked up at the flea market years ago. I think it might be an old baby tub? As for the bog garden I have a friend who's into growing pitcher plants and they're really beautiful and need to be somewhere where their seen up close. So I thought the tub would be good for that. As for how many pots? I don't know. I haven't counted this year. I like to think less than last year but that's questionable:) I couldn't possibly have more that you, could I???

Ewww! he's just as creepy as I recall, Eden. ;)

(and lemme tell ya he needs a yellow Speedo, he reminds me of the elderly summer visitors from Quebec that populate the beaches in my area, lol,). Wendy will back me up on that one.

Now which pot is he in in the 5th. picture? No wait... YEAH! got a bead on 'im... . Bingo!

Kathy, the round iron piece is just a something I found at Homegoods.

Deanne, here's a link I'm following with instructions on how to set up a bog. Great idea for the ligularia but I don't know if you'd set it up for that the same way. Last fall I moved my l.prezwalski right behind my fountain. It's always wet there from the water splashing out and the ligularia seems happy there. I also put my rodgersia in that area.

Chelone, you must admit I have a valid point ! Especially if you go to the B***h roles from 50's 40's,and The World of Henry Orient.And with the right hair-do and a little heavy make-up it's Mrs Lovett from Sweeney Todd.

Eden , unfortunatly I googled Homegoods and went to storefinder and I'll be damned if they aren't in Vacaville, about 30 minutes away. Jeesh!

Eden I LOVE all your plants! I have to go back later and absorb your groupings-but I'm amazed at how much you have-that banana tree really sets off the jungle look: )...you seem to be trying all the things I've thought about trying...that tub bog is going to be fun to see later.

That new patio is just gorgeous! You and Brad do great work :)
