Rosa pendulina, always the first, opened a week ago, a close second was its relative and lookalike, a Finnish species cross called Kempeleen kaunotar, the third was Fredrik Hellstrand, a hybrid rugosa bred by a friend, the fourth was Double White. Watering in a mild winter and other questions

Hi Mirenda - well, the promised temperature drop has happened here in the UK with lashing north/easterly winds. Although you have been in Ireland for some time, I really had to laugh when you commented on mild winters in October. As you say, we had snow, this time last year while I have been picking raspberries until late November in some seasons. All goes to illustrate the vagaries of a temperate maritime climate - we gets lots of (short term) variation but never those extremes which afflict places like Kansas, Illinois and other exotic (to me) locales where temperatures rage between boiling and freezing across the gardening year. So, whats happening to mine? Although my pots are still green, they are more or less static in that not a leaf has changed over the last month - only the hulthemias are still hopefully producing buds while all my others are definitely winding down. As for watering, until a couple of weeks ago, daily watering was a given but now, shifting into cooler weather, I tend to let the plants dictate their needs and hold off on the watering cans until it is obvious (by crinkly leaves) that some is needed. I can go for days or even weeks without filling a can. Trust your eyes, Mirenda - if the roses look OK, they are OK. They do not lose their leaves like trees, but drop foliage gradually over the whole winter, caused more by winds and rain rather than the very straightforward leaf-shedding in deciduous trees. I don't know whereabouts you are in Ireland but if anywhere near the west coast, you can probably stash the watering equipment till next spring and let the misty Irish climate do the work for you. Even here, in the arid east of england, I heave a sigh of relief that the incessant watering becomes less urgent.

Hi Roselee. If you got the snapdragon vine from Patty, I think she got it from me several swaps ago. I got it from Barton Springs Nursery and they called it Big Bend snapdragon Vine. An empoyee collected it from a valley there. I think I have gotten a ID of Maurandya barklayana but the picture online does not agree with it, so I am not sure about it..The Peckerwoods Gardens had it IDed as such. Asarina is the same thing. The name Asarina has still stuck in the comercial world but the scientist are all over the place with this family's name. They also call the family Maurandella . It keeps me pulling my hair out trying to keep up. some asarinas are much larger leafed. Mine staid around for 4 years but those nasty winters and drought killed it off, but I have lots of babies. I have a much more delicate roving sailor vine that is just like this but tiny and it comes in blue and a pink variety.Maurandya antirrhiniflora or "Roving sailor". They make LOTS of seeds.

Lovely, lovely, Roselee. I had every intention of cutting my climbers back severely last month as the heat had NOT been kind to them, but alas, did not get "round to it", so now my Don Juan is putting on quite a show. Maybe that is why I procrastinated ...think??? Also, my Grandma's Yellow rose, Hot Chocolate, Belinda's Dream, Perfume Delight, Chrysler Imperial, Coral Dawn (a climber I picked up for $4 at Walmart and she smells heavenly), and fianlly, a rose that came from an old farm house down where I grew up..........have no idea what the name is......it is red, gets very large and blooms all year except the very dead of winter. Love that rose.

Florence, you have the most romantic garden, with big, gorgeous rose bushes and climbers. I LOVE the big windows you have all around in your dining room. Your "found" rose is to die for. It would be wonderful to know what it is. It's absolutely gorgeous.

Florence, you live in paradise, rose heaven! I love Grandma's Lace! Going to look her up on HMF and then off to purchase YET ANOTHER rose.

When will the rose buying cycle end? My wallet cannot keep up with all this enabling from the forum. Oh, but I do LOVE shopping for roses :-)

They are wonderful pics, Florence. I love the abundance of blooms. I'm not familiar with Grandma's Lace, it's lovely. Thank you for the introduction.

Thanks for posting, Florence. I hope this spring is the best ever for you. My cousin in Chicago called about 2 days ago and she woke up to - Snow!! Crazy spring for the Midwest.

Thank you for the inspiring photographs. And I love your roses in vases. The round cut glass ones are to die for. You can bet I'll be keeping my eyes out for something like them but I know how valuable they are. I saw a film once showing the glassmakers (Waterford?) making the cuts/carving into the still-warm glass, amazing.

Hope your spring comes soon and is just as beautiful as your photographs are.

Denise---I've been collecting vases for many years----a few years ago I started to collect "rose bowls" and I do love them----someday I will get them all together and post a picture-----I've been lucky to find them in thrift shops and yard sales---A couple of my cut glass ones are from TJMAXX-----and they were quite reasonable----It is amazing what you can find at TJMAXX-----
