Night blooming jasmine won't flower
Comments (14)Hmmm the cestrum nocturnum that bloom here the best seem to be the ones on the front flowerbed and they get light from the windows in the house at night plus the porch light that stays on most of the night. There are 5 huge ones out there. I have more in the back yard and they flower pretty well back there in total darkness too. They do bloom on new growth. I cut mine back (if they didn't die back in the winter) then feed them a bunch of miracle grow and top dress with composted chicken or rabbit manure. They seem to flower best in full sun. If you keep trimming them back a little after each huge flower flush you can keep them blooming till frost. I keep a few in pots as well Hawk Moths love the nectar I do also have an Indian Night Jasmine Tree (Nycanthes arbortristis) that seems to like total darkness at night. It also blooms on new growth. Comments (10)They look a little stunted, to tell you the truth. The northwest wall usually doesn't receive a vast amount of sun, and dahlia are definitely full sun critters. I have mine in 10-12 hours of sun per day. I'd also call them pretty good feeders in good sun as well. I feed very heavily with an organic monthly, and lightly weekly with a synthetic. All things considered, it counts as "a ton" of food. Even so, this was...not a great year for dahlia and mine aren't doing fantastically well, either. I think it was simply too hot, amazingly enough (the durable dahlia doesn't mind heat). My Thomas Edison isn't blossoming well, and usually those are troopers. The Garden Wonder is...not wondrous. The Duet is not singing. The smaller dahlia are doing well, but the larger ones are not....See MoreHindu rope won't stop flowering

Comments (16)"I've observed the same with other woodies such as viburnum plicatum tomentosum some rhodies and a stewartia." With the exception of fruit trees, the vast majority of woody plants do NOT observe alternate bearing or biennial flower production. Once established, they will flower consistently year after year provided weather conditions are acceptable for the flowering. I would be interested in seeing any scientific evidence that would support the alternate year theory. With a degree in horticulture and many decades growing and gardening professionally, I have never seen any reference to this outside of fruit bearing trees....See Moreifraser25
