Archduke Charles Bloom Progression

This is an Archduke Charles bloom from bud stage to full bloom. This took place over a couple of days. Sorry about the poor lighting in the last photo. Notice that the buds start off crimson, then bloom out light pink, then turn crimson again. Imagine a bush full of these blooms at various stages of bloom and you have many shades of pink on the same plant. It's a wonderful effect.

jovy, so far I only know roses that change color from a dark color to a light one, basically they are fading out. I was not aware that it is possible that a rose can change back color from dark to light to dark pink again. How interesting!

Lovely pictures! This rose is interesting and different in each photo. I had this rose some years ago and for me it mostly turned dark red very quickly, probably because of the heat. In the right climate I think this is a great rose.

I was just imagining a whole hedge of Archduke and Ducher. How gorgeous that would be. If you need something to blend with Mons. Tillier, I would pick a peachy pink tea rose to plant near him. I'm not sure which ones would have a growth habit that would blend with him, but I don't feel they need to match exact anyway. Maybe something like Georgetown Tea, or perhaps a warm yellow toned rose such as Safrano. Otherwise, a white rose would give the needed seperation. I once had a cool pink rose next to Archduke Joseph, which is a tea most people feel is Mons. Tillier. The effect was not pleasing to the eye. It was rather jarring, and I'm not very fussy about colors. Again, I don't know if any of my suggestions would blend enough for your satisfaction in terms of growth habit. Mine aren't large enough yet for me to judge, but perhaps someone else would be able to chime in. Even so, you MUST grow at least one Archduke Charles, somewhere! Sandy

I agree! I have two planted along a fence and they are doing great and are among that small group of roses that don't need spraying here, even in the Spring and Fall when the BS descends from.........well, maybe I shouldn't say DESCENDS but ASCENDS - ha! The only thing that "bothers" me is that they tend to send out unruly shoots that may be two feet longer than the rest. Kinda like a wild whisker or something. I'm never quite sure if I should cut it back or let it fly! Lynn

I'm also a fan of Archduke Charles and love that it is a little more upright than other chinas, allowing a little more room for neighbor roses. Cramoisi, however, is my favorite rose and is the only OGR that I have three of. Like Sammy, I love that it is big and it is truly impressive. A tough choice indeed! I feel Ingrid's pain. OB mildewed for me, too. WORSE! The climber also mildewed. But I have seen these roses in other places, so I know not everyone has this problem. Zippity is right. Old Blush LOVES Texas. (And I grow the China From Adina despite mildew because -- well, wouldn't YOU, if it came from your family cemetery? It's actually becoming more resistant as time goes by.)

In the heat of summer, this rose does indeed turn crimson almost immediately. However, in the spring and fall it stays lighter pink for a while before turning red. The fragrance is also interesting in that it has a peppery scent to it.

Beautiful pictures! Archduke Charles is one of my first Chinas and still the favorite. I have another rooted and it will probably replace one of the thrips magnets now in the garden.
