China and dinnerware

Ever since I read about smartbargains, I've been combing the places I know of to find rose dinnerware. I have searched replacementsltd, rubylane, and smartbargains. Are there any places ya'll can recommend. I'm not looking for collectors items, just pretty dishes. I found one I love but the pattern is discontinued. I prefer something I can put in dishwasher.

HAve you tried e-bay--------sometimes you csn find neat dishes------flea markets and garage sales are also good.

You've collected some great pieces Jeanne. I didn't even know there were teapots, pitchers, and lamps in that pattern. Mostly I've just seen the plates and bowls maybe a few serving bowls. My sister had a few of them, and I see them in allot of the antique stores too. You have a good sized collection and they look lovely in your cabinet along with your angels--but just wait till you decide to use them and do a tablescape with a pretty centerpiece and other "accessories"! It really is fun to see what you can create, and you can do it just for fun--so don't wait till next year, okay? ;o) Luvs

Ok, so I wasn't seeing things when I picked up some iridescence! :-) It didn't look like a Fenton piece to me (I also adore Fenton glass, which is why I included a photo of my lamp in this thread. I think I gasped when I saw it across the store and practically dove for it, lol). I'm only semi-familiar with Fostoria since what turns up in Goodwill is mostly the American pattern - and most of THAT is actually Indiana's (?) Whitehall pattern. (After a few mistakes, I got pretty good at telling them apart, lol.) I browse through ebay from time to time, just to see what's out there. Even when I find things I like, the shipping (and sometimes just the bid price) puts me off. I think the thrill of the hunt is just as much a part of it for me as the actual collecting and surrounding myself with pieces I love. I had to look up L.E. Smith because the name rang a bell but I couldn't place why. It's because I have a blue moon & stars compote holding garlic on my kitchen counter. :-) I could look at pictures all day, too! After I posted, I worried that my initial post would seem show off-y and that was totally not my intention. I just love to see how people display things and what "sings" to them. The funny thing about that harp cake plate in the first photo: My parents are antique collectors and part-time dealers. I was visiting and saw that cake plate; I was immediately drawn to it. I said, "Hey, if you find that it isn't worth anything, can I have it?" So, next time they visited, they brought it to me. I happened to notice a harp on the base and grabbed my depression glass book (I knew there was a harp patter but I only knew of the crystal with gold trim). Lo and behold, there was an ice blue cake plate shown. I called my parents the next day to gloat, mainly because I figured out what it was. I got to keep it on the condition that I didn't sell it. LOL

Moccasin- The sink in the picture is a prep sink, and it is 8" deep. There is room for a trash pull-out because it is a single bowl sink. OTOH, our main sink is a monster- 10" deep and 43" wide. But- it is a double bowl, so I don't think I'll have room for much of a trash pull-out. I built a 44" cabinet for it, and the 35 gallon trash pull-out I bought for the prep sink won't fit because of the drain fittings. I'm not sure how big the water heater would be. I could have built a bigger base cabinet, but then I would have lost a stack of drawers. There's a lot of room under the sink; it's just not very tall. I'll post a picture of the main sink later today.

Hi rilie -- I have a lot of dishes, including service for 18 of Gien in the Oiseau Lyre pattern. It's similar to their Oiseau Bleu, which is on your link. We've used it almost every day for 12, going on 13 years now. Not a single plate has ever broken and I think I may have, say, 1 tiny nick on one dinner plate. It's really durable, even in our 25 y.o. dish washer that has heated drying. DH abuses it and puts it in the microwave so some of the plates have a bit of crazing on them. But it's difficult to see. If you're going to have 1 set of china, the styles in this brand are really good. They had a lot of personality and charm and make a great table. We use ours every day and for company. It wasn't cheap but it doesn't owe me anything and I still love the pattern as much as ever. One of the things I like about it is that it's relatively light weight but strong. I don't care for heavy dishes. I purchased mine at Michael C Fina, which discounts. I don't know if that helps you from Canada but you could likely find a good source there. No worries with the quality whatsoever. My only suggestion would be to purchase 1 full place setting so you can see it all together and be sure before you order. Good luck with your decision. Got a set of Noritake "Wedding Veil" china - service for 12. Thought they were quite pretty when we bought them back in the late 70s. Anyone familiar with this pattern? The blue was nice during the year and also at the holidays - used a blue and silver theme instead of the more traditional red & green. Saved on having special holiday dishes. Doesn't seem to be popular any more. Just wanted opinions about how it looks to you.

Depends on your rose taste Carla. In the decorating gallery, a lady named Judith has photos of her table and used Pfaltzgraff Silk Rose that does go on sale at Macy's 50% off last I looked. The photo should be in here under Valentines table IIRC... and I also found Lenox "Accoutrements" Dinnerware Collection which is more my style.

Carla, replacements.com didn't have more pieces of the pattern that you liked? They specialize in carrying pieces of patterns that are discontinued. Like my Mikasa White Silk.

Florence, I could spend hours at the decorating forum. They have 3 sections, I check the off topic just about every day, there are more people there then here any more.

Carla, I think I sent you the link before I moved. If you actually read her posts (instead of only looking at pics) she shops at places like Marshalls, Ross & TJ Maxx. I don't know where she finds room to store everything lol

What kind of dish pattern are you looking for? I know of another pattern that I was going to buy but am unsure of now. I have the glasses that go to it, not sure if I want printed dishes now.

I need to commit to new dishes too but this whole shopping for the new house is a lot of work. I ordered my son furniture back in June, it never came in; turns out they discontinued it. I went and purchased the floor model Sunday, spent 3 hours at sears. We got it home yesterday, Charlie is setting it up and after waiting 3 months the bed frame is huge. I don't know if I can get a frame that will work with the headboard only :(

Funny story. We had a yard sale in July and I had my first dishes boxed up for years. When I saw them, I kept them and am getting rid of the other ones.
I'm not in the market for dishes now.
