Blue Herons Stealing Fish from Pond---Help
Comments (24)I too had to go with a net after losing two koi.. the floating aligator didnt work for me.. anyone know where I can get a clear net?? I would like to swap the black one out for clear as I think it would look better.. I hate having to net the pond at all but I dont like losing koi either.. I checked pondnets.com and they look to only have black and their nets are a bit pricey too.....See MoreHow I love nature...
Comments (10)I get a lot of critters around my house too. No mice, that I've seen, but the squirrels like to barrel through the gutters and play hopscotch on the roof. The deer will eat my roses if I didn't have a natural deterent placed around them - it's quite a shock to pull around back to unload groceries and see them standing in the middle of my yard, staring at me like I've just invaded their private space. I've caught the racoon family (lives under my neighbors garden shed) feasting in my garbage bins on many occassions before the kids finally learned to keep the garage door closed at night. And then theres the wood pecker who lives in my bedroom wall. It does't matter how many times we've sealed his "door" shut from the outside, he pecks his way back into it again. The leeches in the pond, the snakes in the lower part of my backyard (at least they're not poisonous!), the pretty little fox who's been known to run right past me in early morning clutching his breakfast (he favors bunny rabbits) in his mouth, barely even looking at me. I actually DO love it! But then again, I don't have herons in my area. :o)...See MoreHeron?
Comments (35)I'm South Jersey- We just upgraded from 3 small preformed ponds too a 11x21.5ft pond 2 weeks ago, while we were digging the hole 2 herons flew over each night-like they knew what we were doing -but we figured because we have outside cats wondering around and a couple dogs in and out , we wouldnt have to worry about our fish....Not so . This past Sunday morning I noticed 2 of my big shubunkins where gone and a few little fish. A small turtle and 2 dozen minnows we had kept in one of the small preformed ponds...I thought coon, cat or those Heron's..we suspected it was a heron- so last night we put up string, criss crossed etc. because that is what we use too keep the geese and swans out of the bogs because they do alot of damage too the cranberry vines on the farm, in the fall and winter- I also put a blueish grey pelican statue about 3 ft high along side my pond Sunday evening that my dad gave me. No fish were missing Monday morning and none today , however my neighbor called at 6 am this morning because there was a Heron sitting on the peak of our roof...but by the time we got out there he was gone.at least we know what we are dealing with.so whether it's the string, or the pelican statue (the statue was there before the string) keeping him at bay I dont know but am hoping he just finds a new place for breakfast...we are only a couple hundred yards from a creek that goes into a lake and why he would rather eat my poor fish -then get some good crayfish and catfish out of the lake is beside me. I was sick to my stomach all that hard work building a beautiful pond for a lousy bird too come ruin it, but hopefully now we have it under control. Will let you know if he comes back to visit....See MoreTotally OT: A blue heron & my fish ponds
Comments (15)Jenn, My weekend television (and as far as I know, my backyard) was "alien" free! LOL Judith, Glad you're feeling up to posting a little. Sorry to hear you've probably decided to not build a pond. Right now since it's below freezing I dread going out to do any work on my ponds, but come warmer weather I'll sure enjoy the benefits. Gagesgranny, Some type of cover is the best way to protect the babies. I have used the black plastic bird & deer netting in the past, but only in the winter to stop leaves. Looks like it will be become a more permanant fixture around here. Sue, I don't understand the banning of koi and not goldfish in a lot of places as I thought one was as potentially as much a hazard as the other, but I'm no expert either. I read about the koi being seized from a restaurant and was also happy to read they had been given back to the owner. My goldfish are just as special to me as my koi are so both are fun to have....See Moresheepco
