Think Neighbours, there are 300 sunny days a year and if the day is sunny the sky will be a searing blue, not that wimpy moisture laden wishy washy blue UK sky. Spray the roots daily? you jest. I've only got three plants but they flower every year without fail. They are in a shadehouse down the backyard. 50% shadecloth in winter. Two layers of 50% shadecloth in summer. They are exposed to the wind and rain. Average temperature 7 to 17C winter. 17 to 27C summer Low for the year 1C high for the year 40C. They are tough. No fertilizer from mid autumn till they flower. No watering except for natural rainfall during winter. It does rain, sometimes lots in winter, sometimes it might not rain for weeks in which case the plants might get a meagre squirt or two from the hose, i don't believe this bone dry stuff. If the prevailing winter westerly wind is blowing the humidity will be low. So, those Dens are out there where Phals cark it. Forget all this tropical stuff, they are not tropical lowland orchids. Think of the two seasons. The warm wet and the cooler drier and you might be on your way. To answer your question you should let the medium dry out to just damp before watering again. If you get the new growths to grow after flowering you should keep the plant warmer and increase watering and fertilise. (though i'm not sure how you get the plant back on track) Sorry that i cannot tell you exactly what to do....you have to interpret what people write here and try and adapt the advice to your conditions.

Sav no i grow everything outside. Dens of all types are grown in full sun. Temp is the key as to whether or not to water nibile types. If you have temps in the low 40's consistantly for a month or more, then you can water less then summer, sparingly. If you are growing warm and continue to give water they will keiki instead of flower. keep dry until the actual buds form, they dont have to be big, just big enough that you can tell that they are flower buds. then start watering as usual. I have many nobile types, and they set bud at different times. My Den. Super Star 'Other Worlds' is just at the point that I can see the actual buds. Next week it will go in an area of the yard that I keep well watered. Others like Oriental Smile 'Fantasy' show no signs of anything yet. and as for my soft canes, anosmum, pierardii, lodigesii, will get not a drop either until buds form.

Lovely, I envy you. I'm spectacularly unsuccessful with nobiles. They either don't bloom or make a lackluster flower or two. I know what you are supposed to do and give them the dry, cold rest but can't get them to bloom. I have given up on them. One of the reason I have almost entirely healthy, vigorous plants in my collection is that I banish the ones that don't like me. After 2 or 3 tries I'm tired at looking at non-blooming stems or leaves and off they go to the numerous auctions we have in our area where the societies bug you for plants. Andrea, I'm able to get a cool temp. in the fall as the weather gets colder. I've done it two ways. The year before last I had them outside until it got to around 45 degrees. This year they stayed in the greenhouse all year and I start running my heater slowly to save money. In Sept I set the temp at 45 put most likely it never gets the cold. Then in Oct I put it at 50 degrees. Nov gets 55 degrees and when Dec. hits we put 60 at night and 68 during the day. Remember in a greenhouse just because I set a temp. at 50 degrees that means it's a min. but the sun may bring the temp up to 85 degrees. In my reading I think these nobile need at least a 58 to 55 degree temp for at least 2 to 3 hours per day for a months time. Just leaving them outside late into the fall usually meets those requirements. Even if you had to move it inside to a enclosed porch if you don't want to get it too cold. I find them easy to rebloom, and yes there are a few that don't even require a cool period to bloom. I also don't give them fertilizer from Sept until after they bloom. August might be an even better time to stop giving them fertilizer. Look up Yamamoto orchids in Hawaii for more instructions.
