sequence pumps vs. submersible?

I have been looking to buy The Sequence 750 Series pump. I am looking at the 4200 from webbsonline.com I am wondering if a sequence pump is going to be the better option for me or if I should go with a submersible type? My pond will be 15' round and 2.5' deep in the shollow end and 3' in the deep.

I was thinking the external woud be a bit more up from but cost alot less each month. Anyone have any advice on which is better? I know I am prolly opening a big can of worms but I am not sure what kind I should get. My local pond place told me they recommend an Alpine cyclone 4000 pump. Told me it costs like $14 a month to run. I ran the figures and I came out to about $20. The sequence only costs like $14 @ .09 cents a kwh.

Any help would be great.

I am hoping to order a pump by the end of this week. I start pond digging next Saturday.

I have both and if I were you, I would go external.My External is a WLim and my sub is a Tsurumi.
The external is much easier to access and is more energy efficient.

I started w/ submersible and now am happier with external. Also fixed bottom drain, added settling chamber and microscreen to work with the external pump.

About a week ago I posted regarding problems with getting my Sequence pump replaced under warranty. Current status is Canadian Pond co waiting for a replacement seal as MDM insists that will fix the problem even though Canadian co told them the shaft is bent on the pump. At any rate it will be another two weeks before I get my pump back or more if I have to get a new one. In the meantime my fish are still in the garage, water lilies are growing in the pond but I have no filtration going or pump. My setup has a retro bd to a 300 gal sc. From the sc it plumbed to the external pump and up to the biofalls/skippy filter. I have one large bag of filter media (net bag full of about 100 scrubbies) in the pond that is growing algae all over the bag. I do have a 1950 gph submersible pump. I also have matala mats that fit into the 3 ft square settling chamber. Would it be feasable to put this filter media in the sc and the submersible pump (in a milk crate to keep from sucking up the filter media)drawing water through the bottom drain and use the discharge hose on the submersible up over the pond edge and back into the pond? I'm not that worried about putting the fish back in the pond as the water temp in their tank in the garage is only 55F but I would like to get the pond running and could move some of the fish out just to get the pond cycling again. Thanks for your suggestions. I am frustrated with this warranty thing and so is the Canadian co as we had arranged this exchange in the fall. Unfortunately the guy we arranged it with is no longer with MDM and the new guy is balking at replacing the pump.

Thanks Mike. I suspected as much. The manual that came with my pump says its a Sequel 750 series 4250SQL13 but I can't find a picture of it on the MDM site. It looks more like the Sequence 1000 series pumps as is that color. The newer Sequels are bronze colored--mine is black. I bought it in 2006 so I think it was a older model of the new Sequel pumps which have 3 variable speed impellers. It's a 1/8hp motor runs on max 175Watts. According to the pump flow curve at 8ft of head it should be pumping 2500GPH, at 5 ft about 3200. Havn't had a problem with the flow now that I added a midwater drain to my sc and running only this pump on the sc. Would you recommend that I pull the pump now and have the bearings checked or wait until the end of Oct (end of our season). With the pump house covers on I can't hear the pump but will check it regularly. Don't want to burn out the motor! As for arcing breakers--had them installed in my house last fall when doing renovations. It's code here now and the inspector won't pass if not installed for bedrooms. Mine have a yellow sticker on them and a yellow test button like the GFC plug (except that is red). They are expensive--something like $120CD each. The GFC breaker has blue switches compared to the black on the normal breakers. They are also expensive. When I did the reno's on my kitchen, livingroom and bathroom upstairs installed new wiring as the old stuff was only 2 prong. Kitchen plugs near the sink have to have GFC plug and a GFCbreaker on the line. My pond plug has the GFC plug and a breaker but it was mistakenly wired to the same circuit as the furnace which is maybe why the breaker was put in. Thanks for your help. Patti

Hey there. Your pond at 1000 gallons is kind of on the edge when it comes to external or submersible pumps. There are a lot of people who will tell you one way or the other is the only way to go but to tell the truth unless you are OC it is not going to make a huge difference. (Just kidding about the OC, folks. I know you just like things to be done right.) I like the external pumps because they are easy to access and most of the junky stuff is out of sight. One of these days when I don't have any more changes I want to make and I am totally happy with the aesthetics I may put one in. I have been using submersible pumps since I got hooked and I can't say they have been a problem for me. I am using an 1865gph pump from Harbour Frieght as the main pump with a backup pump of the same. I also have a 1500gph Laguna pump that I use for my UV light with a cutout to reduce the flow to something the UV can actually use. I have several smaller pumps that would do the job just as well but I haven't gotten around to changing them out. I like the fact I can move the pump and prefilter around to satisfy my urge to change things and they are nowhere as expensive as an external pump. They are not likely to overheat and I don't find them particularly difficult to access. Oh, my pond is currently 1000 gallons. I keep swearing I am going to enlarge it. When it gets to 2000 gallons, I will be sure to have saved up for an external pump. Sandy

How did you hide your external pumps? I hate the thought of an unsighly pump in the landscaping. I seen somwhere that you can dig a hole put in pond liner with a stone bottom and place the pump actually underground and have a vented type lid. Anyone done this? If so How do you exactly do it?

Pump house with Sequence pump that has run 24/7 for 5 years. External pump with bottom drain is the only way to go in my opinion.

I also have a Sequence Pump. I didn't like the idea of seeing a power cord running into the pond.

Curb how deep is your pit you have the pump and filter in? Is it cemented walls and floor?

The floor of the pump house is one foot below water level. It does have a concrete floor with a drain in the bottom. The walls are concrete (a person could use cement blocks) up to ground level with small anchor bolts in the top to bolt a wood pressure treated plate for the top part of wood. The structure is about 46" x 46".

another good external pump is the performance pro,it has more head pressure.go with the external and a settling/filter before the pump.your water will be a lot clearer.a submersible before the filter works like a blender and mashes up the junk so the filter does not trap it out.

My pump is behind landscape block and covered with a hinged lid. Sorry, no handy pics.

Got my sequence pump THursday and got it installed Temp. Well the waterfall aspect is Temp. WOW what a pump. Huge water flow out of it even with long 90 elbows on it. I can't beleive it.
