koi verses goldfish
Comments (9)koi are messier, they get much larger, and are not as hardy. They come in prettier colors and lots of varieties though. Koi need at least 250 gallons each, preferably 500 gallons. Koi can grow to over 36" in length. Their ponds should be a minumum of 36" deep, with 5' deep preferred. There is nothing quite as beautiful as a well deaigned koi pond stocked with a selection of koi. It is like looking into a living painting. Goldfish come in lots of varieties too. Fancies (ryukins, orandas, lionheads, etc) are not has hardy but are very cute. The hardy ones, like comets and shubunkins are inexpensive, hardier than koi and very colorful. Goldies can do well in shallower ponds. They need 50 gallons each....See MoreDo Koi eat more than goldfish?
Comments (13)midwest, you can tell if they are not getting enough. Slow growth rate is one sign....but that may not be such a bad thing for smaller ponds. When they are REALLY getting too little feed, you may notice the head seems larger in proportion to the rest of the fish. A healthy male koi body's will taper out a little from behind the skull, a female will taper out a lot. Healthy females are built just like a torpedo. In a fish that is starving, you will see the body dip in right behind the skull. I'll see if I can find some pictures on the web somewhere of what a starving fish looks like. But the big head is a pretty obvious sign....See MoreBaby koi and goldfish
Comments (2)Very untrue, assuming the koi didn't actually die in the long winter. That would certainly explain no offspring. It can be amazing what people will imagine and say out loud....See Moreminnows & goldfish/koi
Comments (4)I have a self maintaining population of 15 to 20 rosy reds that do fine with my goldfish. Rosy reds only live 2 to 3 years but they breed. The only thing I have to do is cull the dark babies because they are the original fat head minnow color which is not very attractive. Rosy red babies are thinner shaped while the goldfish babies are somewhat fatter when viewed from above....See Moresigrid_hilde
