Here's a nifty use for an unwanted gardenhose and a used up metal folding chair.

I can't claim any credit, this is just the pure genius of my nephews and their friends. Our future leaders!

Jimmy and I are never short on entertainment when we stay at my sister's house.

If you want to "recycle" a wanted garden hose, just leave it stretched out in the yard with a half-dozen recently weaned GSD pups. They'll space themselves out almost as accurately as if they'd used a tape measure and you'll wind up with 7 sections of hose!

I just want to say I went through hell trying to find a decent self propelled, mulching mower after my 11-year old Craftsman finally died. It was a very reliable mower, but didn't cut very even and was a mediocre mulcher. It seems the newer mowers are all about bells & whistle features when all I required was an even cut, and good mulching, and a reasonable self-propelled drive. My neighbor has an older John Deere that he loves, but the new ones suck because they sold off the line to some lower quality process, or so I've heard and read. So I started with the Toro Recycler 20334 from HD, and it seemed to mulch ok until I pulled it backwards over the grass to cut (which is a common move while mowing in a confined or irregular shaped area) and saw it clumping when the grass wasn't even very tall. My crap Craftsman out did that, so back to the store and traded it in and upgraded (+$100) for a Honda HRR216VXA. Well that one seemed more solid and the motor had a nice dependable sound to it, BUT 1) engaging the blade killed the motor at least once, and 2) the bagging chamber behind the mulch plug collected way too much grass due to a poorly designed mulch plug that doesn't fit snugly. I even called Honda to see if they knew anything, and of course they acted like it was supposed to be that way. Right. Also it left a small trail of grass behind the right rear wheel when mulching which I wonder if the gaping hole around the mulch plug could somehow be contributing to that, who knows. Either way I wasn't satisfied with that Honda either so I cleaned it up and returned it for a refund and went to Westlake Hardware and for an extra $30 bought a 20092 Toro Super Recycler because I read the Supers have a better mulching system than the regular Recyclers. Well I can finally say it does surpass both of the other mowers I had and I am very satsified with it. I imagine the high-end Honda is just as good but it's $200 more, which seems out of line for a walk-behind mower, also I heard Honda's parts are too high in cost. Also Toro is a U.S. company here in the Midwest which should help with price and availability in theory. Anyway that Super is a mulch monster, I really like it a lot. I don't know if the standard Recycler is some secondary line made just for HD, but it sucks compared to the Super, IMO.

The S/R will do a much better job of mulching, it is possibly the best available. The bag should not fall off if properly installed.

Great use for Re-Cycled 25 gal. Molasses Tubs. Each tub has a 7 gal, water reservoir built into the bottom with 4 Polyester wicks bringing water up into the soil media planting area by capillary action. Even have them hooked up together with 1/2" dripline hooked into a 5 gal. bucket with a horizontal float valve so the reservoirs stay full 24/7

I don't compare myself to my neighbors. That way lies madness. I do what _I_ can and that's that. My city contracts with the corporation Waste Management. WM provides the Big Green Can for trash and two regular recycling bins per household, one for paper and one for metal/glass/plastic with the option of buying more recycling bins for $5 each (we have one extra). WM won't accept very much plastic for recycling - for instance, they only take #1 and #2 plastics, but probably 75% of the plastic that comes into the house is neither of those types. Grrrr. They only take certain kinds of glass, too. Batteries are not accepted for recycling - ni-cads and lithium batteries have to be taken to dropboxes at most hardware stores, alkalines in the regular trash. We do not compost and I refuse to tear myself up about it. We do not garden, nor do our neighbors, and discarding food scraps outside attracts vermin we neither need nor want near the house. WM has no composting program, either with curbside pickup or dropoff at the transfer station. However, even if they did it as a dropoff option, the landfill/transfer station is almost half an hour's drive from my home and nowhere near anything else for sensibly combining trips, and from an overall environmental POV I think it's pretty stupid to drive nearly an hour round-trip to drop off a couple of bags of carrot ends and potato peels. I use the tote bags for groceries about 80-90% of the time (and I don't stress about using one store's bags at another store, the baggers can make all the faces they want but until they start giving the reusable bags away for free they'll use whatever bags I hand them to pack) but we use the regular plastic grocery bags for so many purposes that I don't castigate myself for forgetting. BTW, plastic shopping bags are usually #2 plastic and can go right into the recycling bin - stuff a bunch into one bag and knot it so they don't go fluttering away when the bin is dumped. The dog-poop pickup bags we use are compostable or rapidly biodegradable with exposure to moisture even in anaerobic conditions (like a landfill). And when they say "rapidly" they mean it - we tested them ourselves in the back yard. They're a bit on the pricey side but we consider it worth it. The "doggie dooleys" are a big PITA and useless half the year here anyway. The local Goodwill started accepting dead computers (I guess they make money somehow on parting them out?) earlier this year and I took over a station-wagon-load accumulated amongst my social circle, but it's very difficult to get rid of any other electronics here. Our city has one hazmat disposal day a year, for four hours on a Saturday, and if you miss it, too bad so sad, you have to figure out how to store it until next year's disposal day. Crazymaking. One of the local pack-and-ships will take styrofoam peanuts and airpacks but will not accept any kind of formed styrofoam (which is also unrecyclable here, so all you can really do is bust it up and either try to reuse it or cram it in a trash bag and fit it into the Big Green Can). We donate and Freecycle and regift and put things out on the curb with "free" signs on them. The trash can is the last resort for things that cannot be discarded another way with a reasonable level of effort.

Fortinbras...Probably that garden hose cost less than 6 doggie toys and will be much more fun.. We want to see photos of those 6 pups...can you post a pic here? And what are their names? josh

Josh..just out of curiosity,if you right click a site,do you get the option of opening it also in Internet Explorer? I have Firefox and once in awhile something won't open so I just open it in IE. When I exit the site,then of course it's automatically back to Firefox.

Marda, I don't know enough to be able to describe the problem, but my Webtv (now MSNTV) browser is 9 years old! But I still love it even tho some sites are incompatible. I was sitting on my sofa surfing on my tv all those years typing on a wireless keyboard when those with computers were sitting at a desk probably in a back room...of course now with laptops that's no longer true.

We can't get viruses, we could always travel...just need a tv and a phoneline...the whole set fits in a briefcase.

We can send photos, add sound, print, IM, most everything but it is not a computer. Some sites are just not compatible but there's usually another site with same info...just not YouTube or some other photosites. Yet I can see videos and photos posted here with video like Don's post with Calvin and Hobbes dancing. Weird, huh? josh

Josh, photos of that crew were not taken as that was between my 1973 Pentax SLR which died and my Vivitar digital camera. That batch of pups were named Cookie Monster, Chulu, Shed, Mo(ron), Traveler, and SFB.

As far as pup chew toys are concerned, everything is gnawable. Clothes off the clothesline, their mother's big old flag of a tail, every inch of oneself they can sink those little needle fangs in when squatting to weed a fence line, and of course

Fortenbras, those pup pix are marvelous (and the site worked fine for me). Love your studio construction and the views from balcony. You really have carved out a little piece of paradise there. Nice that you took photos of the adopters and adoptees together...do you ever hear from any of them? I'd have a hard time saying goodbye to such furbundles, even one named "Biteme"...LOL josh

I'm waiting for my dog to outgrow puppyhood. He's 2 1/2 years old now & I'm still waiting (and hiding my good shoes).

Josh, it's been a looong day for me (comment deleted) and tomorrow promises worse but I've started a post I think you and most all GP'ers might enjoy.

pamven, you might be wrong. Ever had a patch of Beagle puppies?! Back when the Earth's crust was congealing, Nina went to tend her birth children in Nevada (normal, regular routine including when the kids grew up and there was the absolutely beautiful (and spoiled) first granddaughter) for 19 years) (don't you love nested ( ) plus more?!) Yeah, I'm lost as well!

Alright Already. ANYWAY, her and I were living in sin (sometimes better than holy matrimony (or is it matrimoney) Don't know really) (how do I close all these ( )?))

...and we'd been discussing pooches for quite a while. LA (lower Alabama) born me, had very few years in my 36 years I'd not had a critter or ten, she being upscale Westchester NY, very few. Her pick from her youth on the upstate gentleman's farm was GSD. GSD's or any other long-legged sight hound is totally unsuited for city lots.

ANYWAY (I did it again (what did you expect?)), she was off for 8 days (I had to use all my fingers and toes, subtract a few, recall the date, figure out why, then cut off a few toes and fingers), about 4 days into her visit I called a friend that raised AKC beags and asked him if the latest litter was ready. Almost. Weaned but not legal yet. Since I was 24/7 on call, 6 rings (obscure, knowable), he came up with my selection (s(he) who bites first, stares you in the eye, and craps in the first shoe found) and drove her (the above has ALWAYS been a female pup.) BTW Pam, don't even try to house train male dawgs before the age of 3. Girl dawgs are pretty-much house trained before first heat. I'll leave that up to wiser minds than mine to understand!

To finish this way too long missive, she came home to me having Muamutt Kapuppy (AKC registered name) for ~3 days. Yep, she was still laying land mines. Yep pup pee. Normal. Yep, Kapup promptly bit her. Love was born!

Josh, this wasn't the post. That one is still sitting in a wordpad file and it seems after maintaining the same phone number for the last 20+ years just in case a few folk I've admired/loved and lost wanted to contact me, sometime between midnight and 10 AM, there will be a cutoff. Same with the internet, prime addy has been the same since there was the first stable IP available. Freely open, also been hacked to griefness thrice. That was an extraordinarily dumb stunt, all backtracked, all but one prosecuited and convicted (the other made restitution)BUT left me with a big bag with various "facilities" that "handle" financial transactions.
