Best Way to Clean Mulm & Other Detritus

Okay. So I'm starting year 3 of my newly enlarged pond. It has two pools; a small upper pool, fed by a Filterfalls and a very small stream, plus a larger water lily pool (about 1600 gals).

Water is clear but the algae is starting to take off, as it usually does without the submerged plants competing with it (give it another month!).

Q.: How best to use a wet/dry vac to clean the mulm and other detritus from the bottom and sidewalls of the pond pools?

I've taken the net and gotten the larger leaves from the bottom, the ones that past thru my autumn netting; however, everytime I use anything in the pond the mulm really gets stirred-up and clouds things for a day.

How do you BEST USE a wet/dry vac to clean this from your pond?! Special attachments? Do you start at the higher pool or lower pool? How fast do you fill the cannister? Do you return the water to the pond? What length of hose?

Any special techniques???
