Netting, When Do YOU Remove Yours?

I've gone some fall seasons without even netting my water garden but this year I was really good about getting my netting up and over the pond and stream early.

When I've done this I've usually kept the netting on all fall through winter seasons, removing it sometime in April.

I occasionally get a bird under the netting and I don't like having to rescue them, so I'm thinking I ought to take my local pond supply store's advice and remove my netting in late December once most leaves have fallen off the deciduous trees.

All the leaves are off the trees now but winter brings strong winds. Have you had much luck where you're at removing the netting before winter's end? That's my question for all.

I take my net off as soon as all the leaves ar off the trees. I also leave my water fall running all winter
so my skimmer picks up any leafs that blow in the pond.

Not all trees drop their leaves in the fall. There are several oaks in our neighborhood that wait until spring. There are plenty of loose leaves, branches and other wind blown debris that are caught by the net. Even the squirrels get in the act by renewing their nesting materials. Twice last year they dumped their old nests into the filter, clogging it. This year there is netting stretched tightly over the Skippy. We've never harmed a bird although a chipper got tangled in the netting that was already headed for the trash but not yet bagged. It was very upset about the whole thing.

I'll leave it on until spring cleanup is done.

So, Florence dear, did you go to the Mtns. ? If so, I hope you had lots of fun and are feeling refreshed. You know, I've been thinking about (and praying for) Robyn and I got to thinking, all this stress can't be good for her health. Perhaps she could get some relief from ordering one, or more, relaxing DVDs from WAVESDVD.COM. That is what I have done to try to ease this great big build-up of stress that I have been experiencing. Well, they came in the mail today, and I put one of the BEACHES DVDs into the dvd player, cuddled-up with my Winnie-the-Pooh bear, and Piglet, on the sofa under a comfy blanket and blessedly dropped off into a deep, much-needed sleep for hours. :) (You might really enjoy them, too.) You see, I have been under a lot of stress due to financial strain, and also due to having a local company squeeze in building a house 5 ft. from my property line in this formerly semi-rural neighborhood. The people who bought and live in that house are chronic noise-makers, doing their wild partying into the wee hours of the morning. Night after night, month after month of sleep deprivation is sooo very bad for my health--I have multiple sclerosis. You mentioned wanting to go to Tahiti, well, so do I!! to get away from them. Also, I am sick and tired of their garbage and beer cans ending up in my yard, and having some of the multitude of their fellow partiers parking in my driveway, on my lawn, or up next to the fence, gunning their loud engines and showing off to their friends how loud and noisy their SPECIAL mufflers are, and slamming their vehicle doors. Talking to them and calling the police (when they are keeping me up late) has done nothing to alleviate the problem. In my less charitable moments, which sad to say, have become more often, I think of them as "The Ugly Americans." :( Rude, obnoxious, inconsiderate people anyway... Debbie

No odor. But that may also mean no nutrients. My uncle, an old farmer when I was growing up, spread manure on his fields and tilled it in within 24 hours of spreading it so the nutrients would not be lost to the atmosphere. He said what you smell from manure is nutrients going out into the air.

what do you do when you don't trust your builder?

Our contract is fixed price with allowances. Our builders approach is that changes in things like tile or lighting fixtures that don't change the work involved for him, are no issue- we are paying the difference in the cost of material. Obviously, if we make a change that results in more labor, this would be considered a change order to be negotiated as everything else was sorted. As an example, if we change from a simple, tiled backsplash in the kitchen to one that has much more elaborate patterns and an increased time to install, then I'd expect the builder to ask for a change order to cover this. To the OP, sounds like a discussion with the builder would make sense- for some areas, it would seem that a process could be worked out to at least help you understand the relative differences in the choices you're looking at? This could be done in a way to preserve the approach this builder seems to have with his suppliers but give you some information to help with your decisions? Maybe it's time to ask the builder to meet you at the tile store to make some progress?

Is your netting pulled tight or is it loose? What is it made of? It seems to me that how it is applied might make a difference as well as the size of the mesh. The chipper that was trapped had stuck its head through a hole and then moved to another spot so it's head was caught. Then it tried to get through another hole with the same result. The cat let us know something was wrong. I had to use cuticle scissors to cut the plastic strands it was so tight. I look for a smaller mesh size now.

My hubby built me a frame I use fruit tree netting,I had a heron empty my pond 2 times no more net stays on year round.I dont have any problem at all birds or anything else.

Last fall the raccoons conveniently removed the rocks anchoring the net around the pond and the wind blew it into the water. I didn't notice this until I went to remove the net after all the leaves had fallen. When I pulled the net out of the pond there was a 2 ft long garter snake that had its head stuck in the mesh. It was too late for the poor critter. It took me quite a while to cut it out of the net. Its head was about 1 inch across and it stuck it through 1/4 inch mesh. Must have been chasing a fish and barreled right through it. I felt so bad. I buried it in the yard. It was probably thinning my herd of fry.
