Please ID this fairly aggressive weed

Anyone know what this prolific weed is? I have a lot in my flower beds. They're easy to pull up fortunately.

A Potentilla of some kind perhaps. Are those leaves trefoil as they appear? Can you give us a picture from a bit further back to show habit?

Thanks. Here's a new view on it. If anyone knows what the reddish plant in the midst of my original unknown plant, please let me know.

Mary, The first one is NOT a weed. It is a type of Rudbeckia - Black Eyed Susan. The second is a Variegated Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium) as others have said. Very nice. I have them as well. There are several types - your's looks very healthy! There's been problem with some of these (bought) plants declining in the gardens after they are bought, but as I said, your's is looking good. :O) Last one is a weed. But the first one is NOT!! I tried to sign on last night and couldn't. Hope I caught you in time...

Looks a lot like a vine called Virginia Creeper, used in landscapes. Makes a very nice vine on walls or trellises. The leaves turn a beautiful red in the fall, then goes dormant for the winter. It grows an extensive root system and is very difficult to get rid of once well established. However, if you use some full strength glyphosate, not the ready-to-use mix but the stuff that is 40% or more active ingredient, you can use a cotton glove or paintbrush or sponge and coat new sprouts when they come out of the ground. This allows you to miss getting your holly by accident, and it will take the vine out but may need a couple applications as regrowth appears. The Roundup won't hurt the holly as long as you don't get any on the holly leaves even though their roots are close together. Your other alternative is to continue doing what you are doing now--keep cutting it off everytime some growth appears out of the ground to prevent any photosynthesis and gradually starve the roots out.

It would be a good idea to find out what it is. I am still unsure, I cut giant ragweed in marginal areas just as it begins to flower so am not really familiar with its appearance at this stage. It has several seed flushes in areas where it gets established, especially when the soil is disturbed, spraying is less effective as a result... big plants shield the little ones. Find some seeds, that's probably the best way to figure this out.

Potentilla sp. still fits the new angle. The red thing could be a plum sucker. Any purple leaved plums around there?

i have had purple leaf plums in MI for ... well... forever.. i never saw a seedling ...

but i have seen crabapple seedlings that are red ...

is that possible from a botanical view??

ps: in fact. the only purple leaf plum.. that ever plummed for me... did the year before it up and died ... i never stopped to wonder why?... MI winters??? .. it flowered reliably.. but never set fruit???? i always assumed it was a last ditch effort at propagating the species... and that was 20 odds years ago .... man.. the flashbacks are going to start again ... lol ...

Yes, it could well be a crab apple seedling.

But note, Ken, I didn't say plum 'seedling', I said plum 'sucker'.

Thanks everyone. I'll be uprooting the Rough Cinquefoil. There are a dozen or so plants. They're big and horsey and I see from googling that they get little yellow flowers.

I'll leave the plum for a while to see what it grows into.
