Roots in Lasagna Garden

legacy77a

This was the first year of my lasagna vegetable garden. The garden is 4 x 16 timber box filled with shredded leaves, grass clippings, compost and bagged top soil.

It was planted with about 10 tomato plants, 4 pepper plants, 2 cantaloupes and 4 bush bean plants. Everything but the peppers turned out pretty good.

Since the weather is getting pretty cold, I decided to pull up what was left of the plants and compost them. What suprised me was the amount of roots that are in the soil. I can't imagine that they are the remnants of the vegetables I planted.

Since the garden box is close by to woodlands, is it possible that the roots of the nearby bushes and trees somehow grew up into the box? There are so many roots that it is hard to dig into the once nice and loose soil. Does anyone have any other explanation?
