Remember those "adventures" we had when we were growing up? I remember the first time I got the nerve to climb a magnolia tree, crawl out on a limb, and hang by my knees. What a THRILL!!! Nothing I ever did as an adult ever came close to that. Climbing up that tree was the inconvenience. The rest was an adventure.

Sometimes I think my whole life has been an adventure, but there sure have been plenty of inconveniences along the way.

In our climate, the latest part of summer and well into the fall means a revival of the annuals who hung in there through the worst of the heat. They get a new lease on life, and often look as beautiful as they do in late spring. Summer and fall are a great way to seperate the men from the boys as far as how a bedding plant shows its mettle. The late blooming perennials are about to kick in to overdrive now as well. The Montauk daisies are heavily budded, the chrysanths are about to pop (not talking about those little bowling balls one buys in the box stores, but the ones who have been planted in ground for some years), goldenrod and native asters are showing God knows his palette, the bright yellows popping against the dark purples. The hawthorn trees are just loaded with haws and some of the cultivars are already blood red, as are the cornus berries and the magnolia seeds bursting from their pods. What I am really enjoying are the fauna components of my gardens. Whole deer families are competing with me for the choicest of the apple drops. Squirrels and chipmunks are harvesting the buckeyes and nut crops and what is not devoured on the spot is most likely hidden in their little treasure troves. This year has been an astounding one for goldfinches. They start to flock up in autumn and we have an enormous flock in the abandoned orchard over the hill. I suspect at least a hundred strong, they come to our waterfall to drink and do their acrobatics on wing. Yesterday I spied a flicker by the henhouse. They seldom venture that close to the road, usually preferring to sneak onto the property behind the greenhouses with the white pines as cover. I also saw a lovely heron on wing when driving home this week. I see them occasionally perched in trees by my pond, because they frequent the strip mine ponds across the road....but this one was flying and the aerodynamics of how it held its head and body were amazing. This was my DAddy's most fav time of the year.

I got my all time favorite annual phone call yesterday. I've explained this before, but here goes again: When I was 10 or 11, the (then, smallish) Ash trees planted on the strip of grass near our street had just turned color. I went outside to touch the leaves and picked one off with a very satisfying "pluck" feeling. I picked another, and another... same satisfying feeling. Before I knew it, I had picked all the leaves off both of these trees. I went and did something else and didn't think anything of what I'd just done. Every house on the street has two Ash trees near the street and there are several across the street at the park. My dad was driving home, admiring the fall colors... until he got to his house and all his leaves were piled up beneath his trees. It didn't take him long to figure out I was involved, and he groused about it for a while. This little thoughtless act has played itself out again every fall since then (25 years ago?). Somehow, it appears I managed to "train" his trees to drop their leaves early. It's undeniable. All the trees on the street are from the same nursery, planted in the same soil, growing in the same conditions. Just as they begin to ramp up to their peak colors, his two trees simultaneously dump all their leaves on the same day... weeks before all the others in the neighborhood. It makes my dad crazy... in a good-humored sort of way. So, I got "the" phone call, and we both laughed hard. This is something we both have grown to look forward to... even though it is weird. I only wished the letter I mailed him had reached him yesterday... I saw a comic that made me think of him, so I put it in an envelope, and addressed the envelope by taping a collage of cut-out letters of different fonts onto it, a la ransom note. I did not include a return address. I'm pretty sure he'll know who sent it. ;o)

I had taken another geology course designed for engineers, way back when I was a sweet young thing, lol. I enjoyed that one so much it made me wonder if I'd picked the wrong major. This one is far less technical, but just as interesting. It strays from the basic rock and strata issues to look at the earth processes like the rock and hydrologic cycles. I have major constraints on my free time at the present, but there was "something" missing in my life and that was a new interest, so I just grabbed one and went with it. I am undecided yet if I want to go on toward a degree, but if I do, it shall be for sure of a technical nature. I needed to get my big toe in the water to see if I wanted to even consider making that type of commitment. To be honest, I'm not getting much encouragement from my sig others. They think it's fine I'm taking a class but not to go for another degree.

I aways think of being lost as an adventure because sometimes you discover the best places that way.

I was visiting Marie (old GP friend in Georgia) a few years ago & we got lost & in teh process came across the Brer Rabbit Museum. It was wonderful & we'd never had stopped if we hadn't gotten totally & completely lost.

My husband took off for my nieces wedding some years back with himself at the wheel. We hit my old "stomping grounds" where I'd lived years ago and I tell him he just took the wrong route and I get told properly and succinctly "You are wrong". So, I shut my eyes tell him good luck and take a nap. Hours later I awaken to a nervous man who is pulling into a one of those state roadside rest stops to look at a map. He admits nothing looks familiar. I am laughing by now. Although we should be heading toward Fort Wayne, Indiana instead.......we are on the outskirts of Cleveland. The wedding is in four hours and the only alternative is to take out on a state route due West, instead of backtracking.

On the outskirts of a quiet little burg I ask him to stop because I recognise the silhouettes of something from the past. It is the honeycomb domes of an old brick firing plant. It was as if time had just forgotten this place. No people were about and no fences. It was not a museum nor an historical site. It just was there. I got out and walked around the old kiln like ovens and if I hadn't known better would have said the calendar was maybe 1910. Things were just there like work would start the next day. We got back in the car and proceded to the wedding. Minutes to spare we arrived.

To this day nobody I have ever talked to knew this place or the old brick kilns. It was like it never existed. That was an adventure.
