Hello - I've never tried Merit, but use Acephate to try to control soft scale. While the mfg. doesn't endorse it for orchids, a research entomologist we know *does*, and should know, as he is an orchid grower. I believe the systemic effect may take awhile to kick in, because orchids grow so slowly; however it seems to be effective in control of the critters, and I hope that over time the plants will become distasteful! I have not experienced any harm either to the plants, buds or flowers; I use a buffer/spreader to extend the effective period of the chemical (reduce pH to about 5-5.5). Regards - Nancy
Systemics do indeed work on orchids. there are people out there who swear by merit. Only problem is the merit WP is that it leaves the powder behind when all is said and done, so not so nice for indoor situation if you care about appearances. and not good for actually applying inside.
I have used WP Orthene (Acephate) on my orchids for years, as necessary, with no ill effects. Be sure to repeat the spray in 7-10 days to get any hatchlings. Spray entire plant to drip off stage allowing it to get into media, too. I use a few drops of liquid ivory soap as spreader-sticker.
terpguy, what is the rate that you are using on the acephate and the imidacloprid? We are getting ready to try it on oleander scale and brown scale on a number of Odontoglossums but wondered about other peoples tales of success/failure and at what rates of application? Does it become phytotoxic at high temperatures or at low temperatures? It is likley all on the label but I always like to hear from the mouths of 'real' people and not just the producer of the product.
I use the imidacloprid which is in the product Bayer Advanced Rose and Flower Spray. It's already mixed, ready to use. I've been very pleased with this product.
