Vandas growing in glass vases or jars

I came across a old posting 2008, This lady in England was growing her Vandas indoors in glass vases. If some members have photos of you doing that. Would you please post them on the forum.

I had a recent greenhouse fire. No structual damage, but he heat roasted all my dendrobiums and vandas that were hanging baskets and S hooks. So now that I am starting over I was thinking on trying some of the vandas in vases.

Sorry about the loss of your plants - that really sucks...good luck in the replenishment of your collection.

Thanks Calvin. I ran across those photos when I was doing my computer search. With those and the lady from England my interest in this method has increased.
I lost over 200 orchids in the fire. But I cann't complain in fact I thank my lucky stars. I have a lean too greenhouse attached to the house. So except for loosing my benches and plants. I had no structural damage. I did say a pray of thanks that night.

SAVE those glass gallon jugs. I'd buy them from you myself if TX wasn't so far from NH. Someone will want them, that's certain. My grandmother used mason jars to root cuttings back in OK years ago. Stick the cutting in the soil in a shady spot and put the jar over it. Check it periodically to make sure the cutting is still alive, and you should see new growth in about 8-10 weeks. I like that idea with the 5-gal water jugs that windsurfgirl used to grow spinach during the winter. What a great idea. Cheryl

Hello Chickadeedeedee, Firstly let me relate my first vanda orchid which is the blue one. I bought it already in a vase and in spike from a nursery. I googled how to grow them and found that during summer(if you get one ha! ha!) you can water up to the little black orchid pot,leave for half an hour for twice a week then drain away. They must get very good light and heat so I placed it on my south facing window sill as I can't heat my greenhouse to sufficient air temperature during autumn and winter. I also spray the roots every day as indoor growing is not that ideal. My other vandas I bought from orchid sellers on e-bay and bought some heavy glass vases very cheaply from Marks & Spencers and just lowered them until the black pots lodged neatly. Some roots hung down and some were above the rim.You don't leave them permanantly in the water or they would rot,only give them a drink and spray. I think I needn't water so often in the winter. It's all very neat now I know I can remove the plants to clean up. The bugs are not scale at first I thought they were tiny pieces of black grit smaller than a pin head,no wings,but then I saw some crawling along one of the roots of the blue one. I just flipped as I have never seen such a bug and there were 20 -30 of them. I must keep checking in case any eggs hatch out. They definately don't mind the dampness and fortunately are not on the other vandas. Hazel.

Bradarni There several reasons I give them these hormones: 1) I have an endless supply of them 2) If Ahnold, our guvernator, got to be Mr Universe 6 times and fearless leader of our state twice, on the back of massive amounts of steroids, these powerful hormones may do some good. 3) Some of our senior members, who have been growing orchids longer than they have been alive, think it's a good idea. 4) Yours is the first intelligent comment I have had about the practice. If you are certain they do no good I'll stop as I have zero evidence it's beneficial. I don't think it's doing any harm either so it's similar to some of the Vitamins we spend billions of dollars on, they make for expensive urine, my OCs would make expensive run-off if I had to pay for them. Since our government subsidized Pharmaceuticals are paying for them I have no problem with expensive run-off. Seriously, as I said I have never had an intelligent Nay or Yea on the subject until your post. I am sure I do many things that are redundant this probably being one of them. If you think plants are unable to benefit from the mammalian hormones I will stop using them and add them to the drinking water of my 11 year old grand daughter instead, she is beginning to take shape much to the horror of her father. Thanks for the info. On a different subject, I am amazed at how many people believe in 'stuffing long roots back into whatever'. To me long roots like that are a sign of a healthy plant and I encourage it. I remember a heavily rooted Phaeli, which when it got unpotted, had not a single healthy root inside its pot. They were all outside. There is a message there. My Vandas have a long beard of roots and I like it that way. I don't think anyone has argued that adding the Spanish Moss will do anything other than to allow the roots to stay wet a little longer. With the same amount of watering this should lead to a benefit or one could water a little less often. Nick

Bill, when you say this Vanda that covers a lot of territory. Do you have a name? I have some "Vandas" that are really Vascostylis, Neostylis and so on. Perhaps not all are amenable to Vase culture.

Currently I have only one picture to share with you. Vanda's in a vase work great. The link to the photo shows a Vanda in a vase. I prefer to fixate the plants in the vase using some wire that I wrap around the vase. I don't take them out with every watering. Just fill the vase and pour the water out after they soaked long enough. In this picture the plant is resting on some skewers. This way the plant still wiggles in the vase and roots get damaged every time you pour the water out of the vase. Each vase contains almost 3 gallons of water and I had to fill the vases every morning! All of them... and empty them off coarse.

Not sure if I put mine back in vases this winter. During the summer mine play outdoors, bare root. One thing to keep in mind is that when the sun gets strong during spring, you might cook the roots that are in the vase, because of the magnifying effect of the vase. Also, you want the vase hight enough to keep the roots from the bottom of the vase and that the vase is wide enough to allow air circulation.

Currently, the Vanda in the picture is flowering from 2 spikes with 15 blooms in total, each almost 5 inch across.

Thanks Nicole I appreciate the information. Somehow I had 3 baby Rhynochostylis that survived the fire (maybe). Don't know how I got them or from where. But I am going to give them a try. So far on my computer searches I am impressed what I see. Nice picture! It really shows some good roots.
