hey john. yes. i agree. simple. over there. but for me here in long cold wintered romania it's another business. i brought a few cuttings from taiwan, indeed they rooted, and did quite well in pots but the second winter they died cause i moved them to my parents' house and as the room proved to be too cold for them, they died. it was an unheated room. i guess i was a bit ignorant about their required temps. also... it was always attacked by aphids (i guess) and i never won the war! so now... i look at their cute blooms, but i don't want to have another one. or who knows???? ...

For many years, we grew Prunus mume 'Kobai', but it self destructed in the terrible ice storm of 2003. Every now and then, we talk about replacing it because it was really lovely, especially when viewed against a backdrop of evergreens. My Edgeworthia chrysantha is probably the most fragrant winter plant, but its blooms won't open till late Feb or early March. It is a strikingly unusual plant even when not in bloom. It's planted near the front porch steps, so we never miss it when it blooms. The Mahonia is one of my favorites for winter fragrance. The scent is so lemony, and its a great bellweather plant for honey bees. They always come out on a warm afternoon to sample its nectar, probably more so than for any other plant.

This was my first Philly show -- almost a religious experience! -- but I found it was hard to get a good sense of scents from plants that had been sitting inside in air conditioning for a while. I don't know if there's a strong difference between white and blue, or that white clone was strongly scented, or if just that particular plant was happy and fragrant at the time. BTW, you know asian wisterias can take years to flower? If you want instant gratification, get an older plant or get an american species like w. frutescens -- Nurseries Caroliniana has a sinensis cultivar that it claims flowers the first year.
