Rhynchostylis coelestis - cool plant?

I think I need one of these. I've been looking at Lowe's online catalog and have found a few nifty things. For $8 I should really get one of these don't you think? It's a seedling of course, but I like seedlings.

It has been on my wish list forever - the price was always too high - until I found it at Lowe's (Hawaii, not the big store - the same place you are looking at) Nice seedling for a reasonable price - I think it will bloom within a year or two (more like two, but it sooo worth the wait)

Thanks. Will do. You're right about the price. I was doing some Googling and $50 was not uncommon for a mature plant. For $8 I can wait a bit.

You guys are amazing...However years ago with other vandaceous..long rooted stems I saw this too thinking it could be from fertilizing..There was a great Orchid house here mostly all from Thai land..Roots dripping on the ground awesome sight....So much maybe they were reaching to the ground for more water at times..but he had the automatic sprinklers systems just an awesome great place to go nuts in .. I had the Rychostylis Gigantia OMG what a beauty ...I think with the amount of heat and often stagnant heat here I will soak it in my sink every other to every day depending on heat in my sink. It seems to be content..I will also try as it grows hotter here at night bringing it inside into 78 degree nights. We all have our weather issues for sure. My other Vanda is living beautifully in the vase as mentioned in another post. Now it is growing new roots and new leaves .../maybe it will bloom...So it must be too much heat here for the conteness of these vandaceous plants. I believe years ago through disease or insects like mealy or scale not enough water I lost a fortune. I felt it was from this grower I'm talking about from Thai land... Now no more from him but maybe they will stay healthy...thx Guys. I see Alturm you like these ..try the vase experiment it is fun to watch ....J'aaime

I take it back again. I do have something else blooming besides the Pleuro. alata. Aerangis kirkii sent up another spike underneath the leaves, and I didn't even see it until lo and behold, one bud bloomed. You can't see it from the top, but if you look from the side, suddenly there it is. This kirkii is crazy. Single blooms have been popping up on and off all summer. And now a hidden spike underneath, a more visible spike on the side, and what looks like the beginnings of a spike off the other side. The obvious spike is coming up from the spot where it has been blooming its one flower at a time, previously. I guess we'll have to wait til next year to decide if this is normal behavior for this one. It's rather interesting, keeps you on your toes, and gives me a reason to pay close attention to it (which I obviously haven't been lately, if a spike could start blooming out of nowhere.)

I got mine at the link below three years ago. It is very free flowering and doesn't have a season, multiple blooms from the same growth. I'm not familiar with coelestis. I'll have to look for info on the plant. I have two Rhyn hybrids, blooming size, and I just love the plants and can't wait for them to bloom! Not familiar with Lowes, I'll look them up too. Good luck with your new seedling!

Coelestis is one of the parents of Neostylis Lou Sneary -- it's fragrant, compact, and temperature tolerant. What's not to like?

Did some checking and it's also one of the ancestors of my Darwinara Charm 'Blue Star'. Love that plant. I think I may get a couple of these for future trade material.

Cool plant indeed. Come on down to Redlands, you will get a bs plant for 20 bucks.

but the ticket to Redlands from where you are will cost you a fortune :)

but have to admit, Redlands show is a *must visit at least once* place for orchid fanatics :)

cool as in neat, yes; not in teps
they love it here in the heat and high humidity
average price about $35 for blooming size
thats what we sold ours for
need to get some more

I though that orchid was more "cool" tolerant than the average "Vanda" . That is why i am trying to grow an intergeneric where this is one of the parents.

they may be cool tolerant
but down here we grow them hot and humid
of course
you can grow some cooler orchids in either more light or wartm as long as you increase air circulation and water
