Plants around Pond

I am taking a break from constructing pond related stuff (will do stream in a week or two)and am focusing on decorating and arranging and getting my poor plants back in the ground.

Here's what it looks like now. On the far side of the pond I have planted flowering bulbs, so there is a blank space that will be filled in when they appear.

One of the things I'm doing is making a macrame trellis around the flagpole for morning glories to climb. I'll get a picture of that later this week.

These are the plants you can see on the far side. From the left: Blue Flax, Spiderwort and Chives. The colors are just beautiful, but they don't show too well in the picture.

Here's the coco mat floating planter I made for the creeping jenny. You can also see Ito and one of the babies.

Here are the two ponds. My plans for the stream are: The stream will originate in front of the cedar-like bushy plant (between the bush and the black pond. It will go down around the bush and into the pond almost in the corner where the mermaid is now sitting.

We are beginning "black fly" season. Really nasty!!! I have a net head covering to keep them out of my eyes and mouth. Jon keeps threating to take a picture of me doing the macrame wearing my net. If he does, I'll post it. We all need a good laugh from time to time!

Easy does it, no more sprains or strains!. I like the plantings so far :)

We're just starting 'Buffalo gnat' or 'no-see-'em' season. Ya never know they got ya 'til you get a itchy welt that lasts about a week! Thank goodness they're only around while the lilacs bloom, 2-3 weeks.

Yikes, glad we don't have those critters here! Just mosquitos, and those are bad enough for me!

I love the idea of a macramÃ© trellis. Very clever, and not so back-breaking. :D

I really enjoy watching the evolution of ponds here on the forum. Can't wait to see your stream, too!

Charlie, I don't know your planting zone, but daylilies do really good around a pond, some water iris do very good, (you have to water them frequently), ornamental grass, big or small, I have small grass, small shrubs do fine, I have a banana plant in a pot next to my pond, I also have canna, (they live over the winter where I live), as for vines, is the fence a wood fence? If so, hydrangea that climbs will grow on wood easily, some jasmines will grow on wood, any vine that has "feet", oh, and creeping jenny will live in and outside of your pond if kept moist. I have it in and out of my pond. Hope this helps.

If you go to the top of the forum and in the search box type "anyone running a pond in winter" Click on search and when it comes up scroll about half way down about the 10th post and look at Joyces little pond. She calls it a Pondsai It is beautiful. Is yours in full sun, shade, or some of both. That would determine what kind of plants to use. Glenda

We have a timber framed pond as part of our deck. It was installed by the former owner. The pond consist of three pools, with two weirs from the top pool, one from the middle pool to the lower pool, one from the lower pool to the pump chamber. One of the biggest problems we have had is with the flow rate. Too much flow from the pump and the volume of water increases in the upper pools; as volume from the pump is greater than the volume that can go over the weirs. Consequently the pools rises above the pond liner. If we were to rebuild the pond I would have it designed so that there were several inches of liner above the maximum possible height the water can rise. When you get your pond operational you will find you have to learn about flow mechanics, biology, chemistry, and several other fields that you have avoided all of these years.

I'll dig up the camera and get out there tomorrow. Today the little girl (13) from across the street came over with a pal and spent the day riding around on the golf cart, fishing, swimming in the pond, pedaling around on the paddle boat, swimming some more, catching grasshoppers to feed Ole Sam Bass and buddies. Was funny because her little pal decided she had to catch Ole Sam Bass and she put a grasshopper on a hook and got a bite immediately. She reeled in one after another and threw them back of course. She got a 12 incher, an 11 incher and an 8 inch bass then she got tired of catching grasshoppers and put a piece of grass on her hook and threw that in and caught a 15 inch bass lol. They came in worn out and we took them to see Ratatouille at the Drive-in tonight then took them home across the street. They wore me out.. I hope they don't come over too early tomorrow... I will do all I can as long as they keep it up. So good to see them not playing video games or at the mall chasing boys. I'd sure rather see them swimming in the pond trying to drown each other, catching grasshoppers and fishing! Gotta find the camera!

Sarah - luckily the black flies don't bite, they just swarm to the point where it's hard to see and breathe, usually worse just before rain/high humidity. We get gnats too, though not quite as numerous, but they do bite. The Deer Flies are the ones that HURT when they bite and they BUZZZZZZ all around yor head before they do bite.

Brenda - my morning glory trellis is a very simple net one, but your comment gave me a great idea for a trellis for the trumpet vine. I had been debating about what kind of trellis I wanted for it and while I was trying to see around the black flies to make the morning glory trellis this afternoon, your comment came to mind and I remember, from back in the 60's or 70's an article about a macrame wall hanging that incorporated driftwood, glass balls, shells, etc. Sort of gaudy, but that idea would be great for the trumpet vine trellis. I'll play around with that and post pictures if it goes anywhere.

Anne, I remember those wall hangings!! I must have seen enough of them for the memory to really stick with me. LOL My mom used to have a lot of the plant hangers around the house, with the wooden beads and the tassel hanging below. Wow, talk about a flashback!

Can't wait to see what you come up with!

I hate to admit it, but I have not only a hanging macrame table but a large lampshade.. tastefully in storage. hahaha
