Raised Landscape Timber Pond

I'm going to start work on a raised pond made of landscape timbers this weekend. I'd like to make it a triangular shape to fit in a small area. I'm thinking about 18" deep and 4' along the back, with sides about 2'.

I was wondering about a couple of things:

a) Would it be OK to excavate about 6" within the timbered area to gain a little depth? I'd probably just do this on one end of the triangle

b) I'd like to build a shelf within the timber frame to place pots on. Could I put in something like a 1 x12" board

between the 2nd to last row of landscape timbers. I would wrap this board in pond liner to prevent it from rotting. What do you think? If this won't work do you have any ideas of how to create a shelf or should I scrap the shelf idea and just put in upside pots to put my plants on?

c) I'm thinking of maybe going a little larger with the frame and partitioning off one area for a planted garden so I can plant some non aquatic plants around the pond.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
