Dear Husband calls me outside to look at what he discovered when pruning the wisteria by our back door. I immediately recall it's a 'saddleback' and am thankful he clipped the sprig of vine it was clinging to, rather than picking it up. It inflicts a rather nasty souvenir if you touch it and come in contact with the barbs on the hairs, sort of like a jellyfish.

It's one of the many non-descript moths one might find clinging to the screens on a summer's night. Pretty, isn't it?

whoah. If I would of come acorss that thing I would have let out a screetch then come back for another look after my pulse settled down.

I found the coolest fungus this morning. Looked like a peanut blossom cookie that had sat out and got the "bloom" on the chocolate. Tried to find a picture on line, but for some reason I kept getting really strange sites. Not sure if was using the word fungi or what.

Can you post a picture of it? I'll bet our collective noggins could figure out what it is.

I had the same problem trying to grow things under a sycamore here. I became too busy with things and couldn't take care of the bed well (with watering mainly) and so scrapped the bed. There is still a strip inbetween the tree and the foundation though, just not directly under it any more. You are not alone, I also found the tree slurped up a lot of nutrients from the surrounding soil. Seriously, some pockets of soil underneath looked devoid of any nutrients. The problem I had was that most of the plants did indeed seem to need yearly feedings to keep from noticeably dwindling in size. There is only so much compost one can put on that sort of bed, especially since too much build up of the soil won't exactly be good for the tree and the roots and "smother" them if too much is used. The strip I have is also getting tapped out in the nutrient department, though I composted it generously the fall before last. I'm going to get some good organic fertilizer for this area and give them a helping in those years I am not able to compost. Liquid fish fertilizer is also a pretty easy way to give them a booster. Alfalfa pellets did okay, but I'm not sure that alone would be enough. Ps. it is not impossible to grow under trees. I had several plants that did surprisingly well there, with regular watering and a bit of nutrient supplements from time to time. Epimedium, Cymbalaria, Omphaloides (surprising), Polygonatum, certain Geraniums, to name a few. Sometimes in "difficult" areas I plant somewhat invasive spreaders, since they are kept more in check in this situation. Carex morrowii, variegated ribbon grass, Ajuga, creeping jenny, Dicentra (formosa I think it was), Limelight Artemesia, Lamium, etc. It's just a matter of finding what what works well for you and a little extra upkeep... Sigh, the only gift card I received was from my brother for Home Depot - and he put it in a three dimensional maze I had to solve before I could get to it. come to think of it they do have lots of gardening and how-to books. I only gave books to a teenage first cousin, once removed. He has started reading science fiction so I gave him two Heinleins -- Red Planet, a juvenile, and The Door into Summer which the grandfather he never knew loaned to me when I was a kid. And Bester's The Stars My Destination which is currently my "best science fiction book ever written." We will see how he likes the classics. Woodnymph, sorry to say L'Engle's Certain Women has been completely forgotten by me except for the title -- and that is probably from seeing it on the shelf. Rosefolly, I'd love that Edith Head book myself. I remember reading a fascinating bio of her decades ago. Have I ever mentioned to you that the dvd of Double Indemnity has some extras about the costume design. Apparently Stanwyck had a broad behind that Head had to design for. Who knew?

Now you tell me if this is normal. Today it was a very chilly, wet and extremely windy day. I came back early from work and just as I was passing by it I thought to try to smell the rose again (not hoping I would smell anything in this kind of weather). And there it was. A noticeable scent of the kind that Camps described. Not strong but much more than faint. Was it, strangely enough, the weather? Was it the fact that the particular bloom had opened fully? I can't tell since it was too windy to stay outside and try smelling more blooms but the scent was much more noticeable than the other day. Which goes to show.... I'm sure it shows something but I'm not sure what!

Susanne I love the funky oroblanco bloom, it's adorable! And almost alienlike compared to other citrus blooms which I love Laura your trees are so beautiful and an inspiration! I saw how Mike has transitioned his trees into a room full of lamps. Soon enough you'll see all of our trees becoming as green as yours one day! I was at IKEA last week checking out lamps and bought the $15 Lersta yesterday. I was setting it up and belatedly realized this was the lamp you suggested us to use back when everyone talked about their overwintering plans! I'm so glad I found it, I love the way the lamp looks and how it's tall enough to fit a lot underneath. I had a different fluorescent lamp on my tree before I got the IKEA lamp and it really greened up my Meyer. Once it became October, my Meyers leaves weren't vivid green anymore and was dropping old leaves like no tomorrow. I should've brought it back in much earlier. I now have an LED grow light in the IKEA lamp and I'm pointing the fluorescent to the side of my tree :) it seems to be loving the light that disappeared outdoors 5 flowers bloomed indoors within a few days of each other! I caught one bloom half open today when it was fully closed last night. Great idea putting the light clamps on the lamp, I'll definitely be getting one to do the same

Wow! Pretty, but "weird" looking, too--at least to me. It does look as if it's wearing a saddle blanket with a hole in the top for air. Mother Nature equipped this one for survival, didn't she?

I'm assuming the false 'eyes' are at the head end and it's facing downward. But.......you never know. I'm also wondering what that white mass is on the upper horn and if it's a parasitic wasp egg.

I'd never seen that one either. Going to pay attention next time I'm whacking at the wisteria. Smiles. It is pretty. Yes, that's a wasp egg. Those do look like the false eyes so it's the back end. Glad you posted Suzy. Something to watch out for. Now I need to go and see if they have them here. I figure they do because the moth looks quite familiar, even though I've never seen that caterpillar.

Eeeeek. Having said that, I think you and DH did a great job in catching a photo of this creature. I hope I never meet it face to face or a@@ backwards.

That appears to be a Tachinid fly egg on the Saddleback. Good catch, Calliope! It seems like they often lay their eggs closer to the front of the caterpillar, for some reason.

Yes, it's truly gorgeous and such a good picture! I had to close down my wholesale container nursery for a couple of days at one time because of these BAD creatures! My employees were practically threatening to quit, lol. I eventually managed to get stung by one, too. It felt like I had been shot.

Many years ago, someone here in the Gardenweb said that this caterpillar reminded her of a Scottish terrior with a jacket. I can't quite get that comparison out of my mind, lol.
