Feed meals in Central FL

Does anyone in the central FL area know where to get good stuff to use in the garden? Stuff like corn meal, alfalfa meal, soy or cotton seed meal, etc?

I'm starting to search. I will probably check at the feed stop right near me first but they seem to be into retail western wear more than feed stuff.

I've been getting corn meal from the grocery but 2 lb bags are so small. All the larger bags are the mix and not really what I want for my soil. I'm trying to search for bulk foods but I'm not finding much.

As I do find sources I'll share. I'm just hoping some one out there will jump in and save me some time of calling and driving around.

I am looking for the same only on west side of Orlando/ Gotha area! orange oil,dry mlassas etc. Thanks Tommy

I think there is at least one feed store up in winter garden though I have never gone into it.
Dry molassas can probably be found at a feed store. Often pretending to be a pallatability aid for horse feed.

I got alfalfa pellets at a feed store too. The corn meal is still eluding me. Perhaps I need to ask one of the grocerys if they would start carrying larger bags of corn meal. I got cracked corn but it really isn't want I want. I've concidered getting a little home grain mill to turn it into corn meal.

Check the library to see if you can pick up a book with organic home recipies. I think there was one book I found that talked about making your own citrus concentrait.

If you are watering only once per week, then you have a shot at fixing this. The least harmful non-organic approach (after pulling the weeds) is to spot spray individual weeds with something like weed-b-gone. The idea of sprays is to moisten the leaves (ONLY) with the spray. That way you are doing the least harm to the soil and soil microbes. Crabgrass is easily killed in St Augustine. Crabgrass is very sensitive to salt and St Augustine is nearly impervious to salt. Thus you can dust baking soda onto wet crabgrass and it will die in a day or two. It turns a nice color of black almost immediately. When you wet the crabgrass, use a little detergent in the water or even molasses so the water does not simply ball up and roll off the crabgrass blades. Then dust the baking soda from a sock. That makes a very fine powder that will stick to the leaves. You might try that on the other weeds, too. I never thought of trying it on dollar weed. Two weeks after you use the baking soda, dust some compost onto the area to reinvigorate the soil fungi. Baking soda is very hard on fungi.

The problem of buying soybean meal in IA, IN or IL, where most of it is grown...is that it is sold by the rail car or truck load...not in bags. Most of the hog farms around here that feed SBM; feed to 1000 to 10,000 hogs per day. The feed is not bagged ... it flows from 250,000 bushel elevators to a 60,000lb truck load and then to the farm. I use the alfalfa labeled for rabbits. I've used cracked corn, but I think the starlings and the crows ate most of it. Most of the other "livestock feed" sold locally is full of salt and drugs (antibiotics). Based on what I read in the news lately my local drinking water has plenty of drugs in it...so who needs to add more with livestock feed? (grin) I live near a large Cargill soybean processing plant and they have not bagged any SBM since the 1980's.

nematodes feed on ants, ticks, grubs, fleas, and too many insects to count yet they leave earthworms, toads, and beneficial ones alone. That should be enough. I've used only once and it seems to last a long time. I never seem to have major ant problem. They would build ant mound but they would never get huge like my neighbors and they seem to disappear overnight. It takes only one ant to be infected and bring it to the ant mound where it dies and nematodes would come out of the ant in large numbers... Nematodes are just very tiny worms...

I have been to the feed store in WG they have some things I need !good idea to make my owne orange oil and vineger concentrate

Our garden is lacking phoshorus, we get 50lb sacks of pig feed which has a large amount of finely ground corn, some cottonseed meal & a few other good fertilizing ingredients. Then you can get alfalfa pellets for calcium & 'N'. From an old fashioned feed store here. Sorry it is in CA, though.
